Jeremiah
18 – The Potter
Genesis
2:7 says, “And the Lord God formed man out of the dust of the earth.” The
potter is the master over the clay. What he does to it, the clay cannot resist.
It can only yield to the potter’s hand. God is the sovereign potter in our
lives. His will and authority rules above ours every day.
Mankind
may resist and fight for our rights, but in the end, God’s will remains. He can
take this earth and shape and reshape it to whatever shape He wants it to be.
He
can make us into vessels of any shape or size.
When
God created us, we were dust. Mankind sometimes forgets that, and we get stuck on
ourselves. When we do that, we become mud.
We
were at one time, lifeless, shapeless, and incapable and a muddy mess. Then God
breathed life into the nostrils of man and began to shape Him after His own
likeness according to His will.
We
had no say when we were born as to what color we would be or whether we were
going to be a boy or a girl, a skinny baby or a fat baby. Or what kind of
mannerisms we will take on. God was the master; He was and is in full control.
As
we grow older, there becomes a difference in the clay of the potter’s hand than
in the clay of God’s hand. The clay in the potter’s hand has no will, we do.
The clay in the potter’s hand cannot cooperate but we can. Now we can ask God
why are you putting me on the potter’s wheel, why do You allow me to struggle?
What is Your purpose?
God
puts a lot of time into molding his humans into what He wants. We may not know
God’s purpose, but we have assurance that it is something good. When Christ
returns, we will see Him as He is, and we will know we were made in His
likeness. When God molds us, He is very kind in not wanting to hurt us but to
shape us into a godly human being. He can take the broken pieces and reshape
them into something new and beautiful. We just must yield to Him and let Him do
His work.
