Psalm 91 - Dwelling in Him, Psalm 92 - Thank the Lord

Psalm 91 – Dwelling in Him

God preserves those who abide in Him and love Him. These promises are not for people who run to the Lord only in times of danger but for those who dwell in His presence and make the Holy of Holies their dwelling place.

Snares and pestilences, arrows, plagues stones, and lions and snakes are the dangers we face. We can also give the modern equivalents for these ancient perils that Jewish travelers faced.

The abiding life produces the assuring life, the life without fear; which leads to the abounding life. The life of victory and peace. The safest place in the world is under the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 92 Thank the Lord

It is good to thank the Lord for every day He gives us. As the day begins, we can look ahead by faith and praise Him for His loving kindness. As the day ends, we can look back and praise Him for His faithfulness.

It is good to thank the Lord that we are part of what is eternal. We cannot understand eternity, but we can have eternal life through faith in Christ; and we can live for what is eternal. (I John 2:17) (I Corinthians 15:58).

It is even good to thank the Lord for old age. In old age, those who live for Christ become fresh, flourishing, fruitful, and faithful. Instead of complaining, they are praising the Lord and witnessing Him.

Psalm 89 - God's Faithfulness, Psalm 90 - Life is Short

Psalm 89 – God’s Faithfulness

God made a covenant with David that he would always have a descendant on his throne and that his line will rule forever. (2 Sam. 7) But Ethan the Ezrahite had a problem. One of the Davidic kings had been defeated in war and had lost his throne. It seemed to Ethan that God had broken His covenant and that God was not faithful to His people.

God’s faithfulness is seen from generation to generation among His people, in creation, among the nations, and toward David and his family. Ethan knew all of this because he knew the Scriptures, but recent events seemed to deny the truthfulness of the covenant and the faithfulness of the Lord.

Ethan’s problem was caused by spiritual shortsightedness. The ultimate fulfillment of the covenant is in Jesus Christ, the son of David (Matt. 1:1), and He will reign forever (Luke 1:26-33). God’s faithfulness does not fail!

When Jeremiah viewed the destruction of Jerusalem, he may have felt as Ethan did when the king was defeated and dethroned. Instead of questioning God’s faithfulness, Jeremiah reaffirmed it. Never judge God’s faithfulness based on what you see or how you feel. His promises do not fail. (2 Cor. 1:18-20)

Psalm 90 –Life is Short

God announced that everybody twenty years old and older would die within the next forty years. No wonder Moses prayed, “So teach us to number our days”.

We number our years, but it is wiser to number our days for we live a day at a time. Life is brief, like the changing of the guard, or taking a nap, or mowing the lawn. In the camp of Israel, a twenty-year-old would not live beyond sixty, and the older people would never make it to eighty. It was a funeral march for forty long years.

In the light of eternity, life is brief-no matter how long you live. You need God’s help to use your days wisely and joyfully. There is real satisfaction in doing God’s will. Revealing God’s glory and growing in God’s beauty. Despite the burdens of life and the brevity of life, life is worth living when you trust the Lord.

Psalm 87 - Zion, The City of God, Psalm 88 - Look to God

Psalm 87 – Zion, The City of God.

That is where the government of the world will one day be. Zechariah 2:10-11 says, “Lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord. And many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day and shall be my people; and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto thee.”

The joy of the whole earth is mount Zion. When the Lord Jesus Christ is there, the world will come up to Jerusalem, and many nations will be converted. The King of kings will make Zion the capital of the earth.

Some people like to boast about the place of their birth, but the “once-born” do not have the blessing of the “twice-born”. Through faith in Christ, God’s children are enrolled in the heavenly Zion (Luke10:20); and will live with the Father forever.

Psalm 88- Look to God

Heman felt like a dead man buried in a dark pit. Like a drowning man sinking under cold waves and billows. Like a defiled man watching everybody run away and leave him alone. Most of all, he felt like a doomed man whom God had forsaken.

But Heman did not give up. Instead, he looked by faith to God, the God of wonders, loving-kindness, and faithfulness. He cried out to God and told Him just how he felt. Your feelings may change, but God never changes. You can trust Him even in the dark, even when you seem to be drowning.

God knows how you feel (Heb. 4:14-16) and is working out His purposes for you. The final verses of your story have not been written you, but God knows what they are, so wait for Him. They are worth waiting for!

Psalm 85 - New Beginnings, Psalm 86 - Strengthen My hand

Psalm 85 – New Beginnings

When the refugees got back to the land, life was difficult, and they were ready to give up. God had forgiven their sins, but that did not make life a paradise. They wanted new life from God so they could rejoice in Him. New beginnings should lead to experiences in new life.

“It is no use praying for the old days; stand where you are and make the present better than any past has been. Base all your relationship to God and go forward, and presently you will find that what is emerging is better than the past ever was.”  Oswald Chambers.

God forgives us that we might fear and serve Him (Psalm 130:4) You must hear and obey His word and trust Him to send the needed increase. Mercy and truth met in His passion when Jesus died for the sin of the world. Righteousness and peace meet in His person. King of righteousness and King of peace. (Heb. 7:1-3)

God’s chastening is for our good, and He is with us when it is needed. He will help us make a fresh new start for His glory.

Psalm 86 – Strengthen My Hand

David was in trouble again. As he always did, he turned to the Lord for help, and he presented some reasons why God should answer him. God was his God, and he was God’s servant. God was merciful, and he needed mercy. He wanted God alone to be glorified in the victory. God is good and great and ready to help.

A divided heart leads only to instability (James 1:5-8), because you cannot serve two masters (Matt. 6:22-24). With a single heart, fear the Lord, learn from the Lord, obey the Lord, and praise His name.

David’s strength and experience were inadequate to face the foe; he needed the strength of the Lord. David knew God. The better you know God, the better you can approach Him with your needs.

Psalm 83 - God's Not Listening, Psalm 84 - Abide In God

Psalm 83- God’s Not Listening

Asaph was perplexed that Israel was in danger and God was silent and inactive. The nations were forming a military confederacy against the Jews, but God was speechless and seemingly doing nothing. The enemy wanted to destroy the nation and take the land, and apparently God was going to let them do it.

Asaph prayed and reminded God of what He did to Israel’s enemies during the day of judges. Then he shifted from history to nature and asked God to send a storm to wipe the enemy out.

Asaph had a purpose in mind – not to just the safety of Israel but the glory of the Lord. Some of the enemy soldiers might even trust in the God of Israel! It was not important that Israel’s name be preserved, but it was important that God’s name be glorified.

When it seems that God is saying and doing nothing, that is when He is the most busiest in our lives. He is not as noisy as the enemy, but He is more powerful; and He will win.

Psalm 84 – Abide in the Lord

The Jews were required to go to Jerusalem three times a year to celebrate Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of the Tabernacles.

Perhaps the priests and Levites took for granted their privilege of dwelling in the courts of the Lord, but this Psalmist did not. God’s altars were to him what a nest is to a bird, a place of safety and satisfaction. Abiding in the Lord is not a matter of geography, for you can worship Him and love Him wherever you are. When Life disappoints you, abide in Him.

What is in your heart is what counts. When your desires are godly, the Lord will give you all you need, be sure your heart’s desires are pleasing to God.

God’s people go “from strength to strength” and from “faith to faith” (Rom. 1:17). As you trust in the Lord, He gives “grace and glory,” for He is your provision and your protection. He gives you all you need in this life. Depend on the Lord for what you really need.

Psalm 81 - God's Way, The Best Way, Psalm 82 - Judges

Psalm 81 – God’s Way, the Best Way

Asaph gave the Israelites two reasons for sharing: Obedience and God’s gratitude for all that God had done for them. It is good to set aside special times to meditate on the work of the Lord in your life.

In spite of all that God did for His people, they would not listen to His Word or do His will. One of God’s most painful judgments is to permit you to have your own way. For a time, you enjoy it; then you learn how much you have missed.

Had they obeyed, they would have experienced victory instead of defeat. Fullness instead of emptiness, and the best instead of the worst. They could have looked back with rejoicing, but instead they had to remember with regret.

The things that might have been will be if today you let the Master have His way.

Psalm 82 – Judges

The Lord stands as Judge and indicts the human judges for their failure to defend the poor and needy and condemn the wicked. Their partiality made a farce out of the legal system God ordained for Israel. (Lev. 19:15)

The foundations for peace and order in society are righteousness and justice. (Psalm 89:14). Whether in the home, church, or government, abandoning righteousness and justice makes the very foundations tremble and brings darkness where there should be light.

The human judges are called “gods” because the Hebrew word Elohim means “mighty ones”. Leadership is a serious thing, for leaders stand in the place of God and will one day answer to Him. The selfish judges may have their days of pleasure, but one day they will die, and then what? The judges will be judged righteously by the Judge of all the earth, and there will be no escape.

Psalm 79 - Obey His Will, Psalm 80 Sheep in the Flock

Psalm 79 – Obey His Will

Asaph is lamenting the invasion of the enemy. He had several concerns.

The temple was defiled, the city destroyed, and the people killed. God permitted these things to happen to His inheritance! But God would rather destroy His inheritance than to allow His people to sin and rebel.

The corpses and ruins bore witness to something that the world needed to know; God is holy and does not tolerate disobedience. Asaph confessed the sins of the nation and asked God to honor His name before the nations.

He said, “Pour out your wrath”, “avenge our blood”. Years later, that prayer was answered, and God punished Babylon for the way she treated Israel.

God’s people are “Your servants” and “Your saints” “the sheep of Your pasture”. Care for them, Lord! Deliver them! God did care for them, but He also chastened them so that they might learn to obey His will.

When you want God to be harder on others that He is on you, it is time to start seeing your sins the way God sees them.

Psalm 80 – Sheep in the Flock

Asaph prayed for the restoration and illumination of God’s people by the shining of God’s face.

Israel was like a flock of sheep led by God. We are Hs people and the sheep of His pasture. But they were wayward sheep who would not follow the Shepherd. So, instead of enjoying green pastures and still waters, they endured tears and the reproach of the enemy.

This parallels Isaiah 5 and our Lord’s parables in Matt. 21:28-46. Israel was a fruitful vineyard until she turned from the Lord and began to worship of the gods of the nations. God used those very nations to discipline His people and destroy the Vineyard.

God’s people today are sheep in the flock (John 10) and branches in the vine (John 15). Do not take your blessings for granted. He is seeking faithfulness and fruitfulness.

Psalm 77 - Follow God. Psalm 78 - Teach Your Children

Psalm 77- Follow God

Joyless days of trouble and sleepless nights of despair plagued the Psalmist, not because of unbelief but because of faith. Because he believed in the Lord, he wrestled with himself and with God. He could not understand why the Lord did not keep His promises and deliver His people from bondage. What do you do in a situation like that?

Of course, you pray and tell God just how you feel. Reach out to Him, but do not refuse the comfort He sends. He will remind you of His past works and wonders, and the more you meditate on them, the better you will feel.

Asaph meditated on Israel’s exodus from Egypt and recalled that God kept the people walking by the Red Sea, that it was night, and that deliverance came just in the nick of time. The people were afraid and certain that God had forgotten them, but He showed His power and humiliated the enemy.

His way is a holy way, and a hidden way. You need not understand it, just follow as He leads you.

Psalm 78 – Teach Your Children

A nation’s true history is a record not only of  how people treated one another, but of how they treated God.

The Jews were commanded to teach their children the works and ways of the Lord so that each generation would know the Lord and trust Him. (Deut. 6:1-9). We have the same obligation today. When Israel stopped doing this, the nation forsook the Lord and God had to chasten them. (Judges 2:7-10).

Israel was a rebellious nation, but God was gracious and gave the people opportunities to start again. This is not an excuse for us to sin and tempt God, but it is an encouragement to repent when we do sin.

God’s answers to Israel’s needs were to give them a spiritual leader, David the Shepherd. He had both integrity and ability, and sought the Lord and love for the flock of Israel. People have not changed; they still rebel against God. There is still a need for faithful instructors in the home and leaders in the nation. Do all that you can to help the next generation serve the Lord acceptably.

God is Judge, we are Witnesses. Psalm 75 & Psalm 76 - God is Longsuffering

Psalm 75 – God is Judge, we are Witnesses.

God is the judge. His people are only His witnesses. We can tell others about His great works and His gracious warnings, but we cannot tell when His judgment will fall. God will choose the proper time, and His judgment will be just.

The proud rulers of the nations think they are secure, but the God who set them up can also pull them down. (I Samuel 2:7). The wicked think they are getting away with their evil deeds, but one day they must drink the wine of God’s wrath.

Meanwhile God’s children continue to sing His praises because they are sure God knows what He is doing. The world needs our witness, and worship is the greatest witness of all. The next time you are disturbed by the evil in the world, pause and praise the Lord.

Psalm 76 – God is Longsuffering

The enemies’ fortresses, soldiers and equipment were unable to stand before the Lord of hosts. It is encouraging  to know that God is for us in the battles of life.

Man’s fury does not frighten God. He uses it to bring Himself glory, like a woman wearing a special garment God is longsuffering, but one day He will arise to judge the wicked. Meanwhile, His people must also fear Him and be faithful to keep their vows to Him. Never trifle with God.

God is Good. Psalm 73 & Psalm 74 - God's People

Psalm 73 – God is Good

Asaph’s basic promise was correct: God is good. But when he pondered the success of the wicked and the sorrows of the righteous, he began to falter in his faith. It seemed that he was wasting his time and energy being faithful to God because the unfaithful received all the blessings, He did not realize that what he called “good” was not what God would call “good”. He was walking by sight and not by faith.

The turning point came when he went into the sanctuary and started looking at things from God’s viewpoint. The important thing is not so much what you own or enjoy but where you are going. What good is an easy death if it ushers you into pain? When life seems unfair, take time to worship and get your spirituality properly focused.

Asaph realized that because he had God as his friend, he needed nothing else. He had more than the wicked, and what he had would last forever. God would hold him, guide him, strengthen him, satisfy his spiritual desires – and one day take him to heaven!

We are not philosophers living on man’s explanations. We are pilgrims living on God’s promises, and His promises never fail.

Psalm 74 -God’s People

Israel was His flock and His inheritance, and Mount Zion was His dwelling place; yet He allowed evil men to destroy His people and His house.

God is King, but we do not see His hand working as in past centuries. We see no signs, and we have no prophet to interpret the times and give us God’s message. One of God’s judgments is to leave His people without a word of guidance because they have refused to obey His will.

Asaph knew the sins of the nation caused the invasion of the enemy and the destruction of the temple. As a faithful Jew, he wanted to see the city and the people delivered and the enemy defeated. That would happen in due time, when God’s discipline of His people was ended and their rebellion conquered (Heb. 12:9-11) Meanwhile, all he could do was weep, pray, trust God, and wait.

Trust the Lord. Psalm 71& 72

Psalm 71 – Trust the Lord

The Lord cared for David at birth, and he trusted the Lord as a youth. God taught him during his mature years. Now he is old, and he prays that God will not abandon him.

Devote time to prayer and trust the Lord to help you, Instead of complaining about what is wrong, praise God for his righteousness and goodness. Practice continual prayer, continual praise, and continual hope.

Depend on His strength and use every opportunity to witness for Him. Ask God to make you a walking wonder who will point people to Christ. Keep a song on your lips and in your heart. The best is yet to come!

Psalm 72 – Pray for Wisdom

Solomon prayed for blessing on his reign when he followed David. As a young man, Solomon knew he could not succeed without the help of the Lord. This Psalm also pictures Jesus when He reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords.

Solomon asked for wisdom to administer justice to his people, and God granted his request. (I Kings 3). His reign was like a refreshing shower that made the earth fruitful and beautiful. (2 Sam. 23:1-7). God can give you wisdom for your sake (James 1:5) and make you a blessing to others.

Peace and security prospered while Solomon were on the throne, and Israel’s domain was extended. God can give you peace and safety today as you yield to Him. He wants you to “reign in life” right now.

God’s purpose is to fill the whole earth with His glory as He unifies all things in Christ (Eph. 1:10).

Stand Strong Psalm 69 - Hurry Up! Psalm 70

Psalm 69 – Stand Strong

David poured out his heart to the Lord. Out of David’s suffering, God revealed His Son. (John15:25).

One purpose God has in allowing His people to suffer is that they might become more like Jesus Christ.

In attacking King David, the enemy were also rebelling against God and inviting their own judgment.

It is not easy to bear reproach because we want to be accepted and approved by others. But in the battle against sin, God’s soldiers are often falsely accused and lied about. When this happens to you, remember that is also happened to David and to Jesus. Meditate on Isa. 54:17

Psalm 70 – Hurry Up!

David was in a hurry when he wrote this Psalm, but God was not in a hurry!  Three times he cried, “make haste” and he ended with, “do not delay.” Like Peter sinking in the water, he did not have time for a long prayer. All he could cry was, “Lord save me!” Matt. 14:30.

Why does God delay answering our prayers? Surely He sees our desperate situation. He promises to give “grace to help in time of need” Heb. 4:16. Our Father’s timing is never wrong.

When God waits, He may have a better gift for you than what you are asking Him for. (Isa. 30:18). His delays are neither denials nor defeats, so put your times in His hands and wait on the Lord. Psalm 31:15.

Joseph waited on God to reconcile him to his brothers.

Israel waited to be delivered from Egypt.

Moses had to wait through ten plagues before Pharaoh let his people go.

Joshua and Caleb had to wait forty years to claim their inheritance.

David had to wait to receive his throne.

Mary and Martha had to wait for Jesus to come to Bethany, and their brother died. Jesus came and rose him from the dead.

God is not in a hurry even when we are, and His schedule is better than ours.

Getting the Message out. Psalm 67 & Psalm 68

Psalm 67 – Get the Message Out

We must get the message out to all the nations of the world because they need light. The lost walk-in darkness and need the light of God’s face to shine upon them. (2 Cor. 4:3-6). They have lost their way and are headed for eternal darkness.

They need joy. Sin gives pleasure for only a short time, but in Christ there are “pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11

They need righteousness which can come only through faith in Christ. Rom. 3:21-31. Man’s righteousness can never satisfy the demands of God’s Holy law.

They need life. “The field is the world” Matt. 13:38, but that field is not producing fruit to the glory of God. Only with God’s life and blessing can the harvest of righteousness come.

Psalm 68 – Great Victories

Great victories were nothing new to Israel, for God had been with them from the beginning. He had delivered them from Egypt and led them through the wilderness into the Promised land. He gave them Mount Zion and dwelt with them there.

Paul quoted verse 18 in Ephesians 4:8 and applied it to the ascension of Jesus Christ. Believers today are part of a spiritual army, marching in a triumphal procession (2 Cor. 2:14; Col 2:15) and claiming their inheritance. They are seated with Christ in the heavenlies (Eph 2:4-6) using their spiritual gifts to serve Him on earth.

The happy procession reached the sanctuary where they lifted their praises to God and asked for His continued strength as new enemies attacked. The God of past victories would not forsake them as they trusted Him and obeyed His will (2 Cor. 1:8-11)

Joy in God's Goodness. Psalm 65 & Psalm 66

Psalm 65- Joy in God’s Goodness

This is a harvest psalm for believers who want to thank God for His goodness and care during another year. Praise and prayer go up to the Lord from the hearts of grateful people. We are told that “in everything give thanks.” I Thess. 5:18

The whole world needs to know about the God of grace and glory. He reveals Himself to them in creation, but they must be told the good news of salvation. God has provided atonement. God blesses you that you might in turn be a blessing to others.

God is so good to send us the rain, fill the rivers, and water the fields. The fields provide food for the flocks, and they rejoice at His kindness. We take the rain for granted until it does not fall, and then we learn how much we need it.

You can find joy in God’s goodness at the beginning and ending of each day, so don’t wait until the “crowning” of the year to praise Him.

Psalm 66 – Praise the Lord!

He invites the whole world to praise the Lord because God loves the world and sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. When you know Jesus as your Savior, you have something to sing about, but do not do it alone. Share the praise!

When you go through testing in the will of God, keep in mind that the same God who brings you in will see you through and make you better for having been in the furnace.

Have you ever made promises to God when you have been in the furnace of suffering? Did you keep those promises? When the test was over, did you praise God for what you learned?

David wanted to tell others that God answers prayer. Worship should lead to witness the glory of God.

Rejoice in Your Savior. Psalm 63 & Psalm 64

Psalm 63- Rejoice in Your Savior

Imagine the king having to leave his comfortable palace and flee to the wilderness to hide! When you find yourself in a “wilderness” situation, take inventory of the things that are important. David said: “I still have God.”

The God you worship in the sanctuary is with you in your difficulty. If you hunger and thirst after Him, He will satisfy you. Matthew 5:6

David could not go to the altar and offer sacrifices to God, but he could lift his hands and his voice as “spiritual sacrifices”. Heb. 13:15. When you praise God, your inner person is nourished, and you are satisfied.

If you cannot rejoice in your situation, you can always rejoice in your Savior. His past help. His present protection and His future guidance. He hides you and holds you, so you have nothing to fear.

Psalm 64 – Fear of the Enemy

The king asked to be preserved not from the enemy but from the fear of the enemy.

Fear and faith cannot live in the same heart. Mark 4:40. If the enemy can make you afraid, he has almost won the battle. A calm heart makes a confident soldier.

The enemy does not fear forming secret plans or leading open insurrections. Their words are like swords and arrows, and they set hidden traps. It looks like David is defeated.

“But God” is the turning point in the story. When the enemy least expects it, God shoots at them, and they fall into their own traps. “All men shall fear.” And the righteous shall be glad.

“The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

“Nothing is so much to be feared as fear.” Henry David Thoreau.

Prayer Changes Things, Wait on the Lord. Psalm 61, 62

Psalm 61 – Prayer Changes Things

No matter how far away you go, God hears your prayers, for His ears are open to the cries of His children. David was far from the house of God, yet the Lord heard his prayer and answered him.

No matter how far down you sink, God can lift you up. When life overwhelms you, take time to pray. Let God lift you up and put you on the Rock that will never sink.

Prayer brings you into the Holy of Holies, under the shadow of His wings (Exodus 25:20), where God’s glory dwells. God preserves and protects His own until that hour when He calls them to Himself.

Do you find delight in prayer, or is prayer only an “emergency exercise” to get you out of trouble? David ended the psalm with an expression of praise and an affirmation of obedience. Prayer changes things, but prayer also changes people, starting with the one who does the praying.

Psalm 62 – Wait on the Lord.

Waiting on the Lord does not mean being idle or indifferent because sometimes waiting is harder than working. For your waiting to be meaningful and spiritually productive, do what David did.

This means not telling your trials to everybody who will listen or even telling them repeatedly to the Lord. When a child rests in the arms of the mother or father, there is no need to make noise. Much talk is sometimes evidence of little faith.

God will work as you trust Him and let Him have His way. Your hope is not in human or material resources, but in the power of God.

It is not easy to wait “at all times,” especially when you feel that God is not following your schedule. If your times are in His hands you will have perfect peace as you wait for Him to work.

David and His Enemies. Psalm 59 & Psalm 60

Psalm 59 David and His Enemies

David compared his enemies to dogs prowling around the city and growling over the garbage. Saul was after him again, (I Samuel 19:1-11), and only the Lord could deliver David. David’s wife helped him escape that time, but David faced several years of danger and exile before he received his rightful throne.  Twice he could have killed Saul, but he refused to do so. He knew that God would deal with his enemies in His way and in His time.

David had a song in the morning because God gave him joy in the morning. Things often look worse at night, so wait for the morning; God will give you the song of praise.

Psalm 60 – David & Joab

David and Joab were leading the armies of Israel against two enemies in the north when a third enemy invaded in the south. When you get one problem solved, another comes along! It seemed that God had abandoned His people and the end was near.

But David did not run away. Instead, he boldly lifted God’s banner of truth and listened for God’s word of assurance. The Lord is our banner, and we can trust Him to give the victory. God’s people are beloved not in themselves but in Jesus Christ, the Beloved One. In the midst of life’s battles, remember that God loves you.

God assured David that He was in control of the nations, so David and Joab stepped out by faith and won both battles.  When you feel broken, you are still His beloved. If you believe, you can boldly win the battle. March under God’s banner of truth.

David's Cave Experience. Psalm 57 and Psalm 58

Psalm 57 – David’s Cave Experience.

“Your own “cave” may be a sickroom, a difficult place of ministry, or even a home where there is tension and trouble. If you do what David did, you will experience peace and victory even in the cave.

David’s faith transformed his cave into a Holy of Holies. His confidence was not in the rocks but “under the wings of God”. In spite of sharp rocks, nets and pits, David was sure of God’s help.

His desire was not to just escape but to exalt the Lord. In fact, when he awakened the next morning, he picked up his harp and sang praises to God.

Trust Him, exalt Him, sing praises to Him. This approach worked for David in his cave and it will work for you in your cave.

Psalm 58 God Judges

David asked God to judge sinners and establish righteousness on the earth. He used many images as he prayed for their judgment. “Make them toothless lions!” Let them disappear like water on the sand or like slime of a snail! Make them broken arrows! Let them be like stillborn children! Let them burn up like fuel under a pot! Let them be taken up in a whirlwind!”

Because he was God’s chosen king, David’s enemies were God’s enemies. No doubt, his personal feelings were involved in these prayers, but his great concern was the righteousness of God and the good of God’s people. David had the authority to denounce national enemies; we have the privilege of forgiving personal enemies.

But you cannot forgive enemies until you realize how wicked their words and deeds are. A holy anger against sin, and a forgiving spirit toward sinners, is the mark of a true child of God. The person who has no concern to oppose wickedness in this world does not know the sinfulness of sin or the holiness of God.

One day God will judge the wicked. When you pray the first three petitions of the Lord’s prayer, you are expressing what David wrote in detail. David left all judgment to the lord but did his part to further God’s holy will on the earth.

Fly Above the Storm. Psalm 55, 56

Psalm 55 – Fly above the Storm

Troubles around David, troubles within him and treachery next to him. These combined made David wish he could get away from it all. It was not easy being God’s anointed king, for with the privileges came great burdens and responsibilities, and God’s enemies  became David’s enemies. Leadership was not easy.

David wanted wings like a dove so that he could fly away from the storm. What he really needed was wings like an eagle so he could fly above the storm, by going into the Holy of Holies, under the shadow of His wings, you get this ability. When you call upon the name of the Lord and cast your burdens on Him, He enables you to overcome.

You cannot fly beyond the storm because you will find problems everywhere, but you can fly above the storm. God permits the burdens you face to help you “win your wings.”

Psalm 56 – God Sees Your Tears

David prayed this prayer while he was in danger in enemy territory. I Samuel 21:10-15.  After God delivered him, he wrote this Psalm as an expression of praise. When you are in the midst of trouble, remember these truths about God.

David should have been in Gath to begin with, but the Lord was gracious to go with him and help him. God understands our situations better than we do. He knows how you feel and He knows your tears, but He records them and retains them so that one day He may transform them into joy and glory. No tears are ever wasted when you follow Him.

God hears when you call. Terrors and tears must be handled with trust. But be sure your motive is not just deliverance. He delivers us that we might delight in Him and serve Him. The highest purpose of prayer is the glory of God.

The Antichrist. Psalm 53 & Psalm 54

Psalm 53 – The Antichrist

This Psalm corresponds to the mournful condition of the last days when the Antichrist is the ruler. He, of course, will be an atheist.

Elohim is God’s name as Creator.

The Bible, which is God’s revelation, is denied and is no longer considered trustworthy, infallible, and inerrant. The first chapters of Genesis are branded as folklore and myth, even by some who claim to be believers.
John 2:22 tells us the Antichrist “who is a liar but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ: He is antichrist, that denies the Father and the Son.”

“He that comes to God must believe that He is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him” Hebrews 11:6

The Antichrist is “who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped, so that he as god sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” 2 Thess. 2:4

“When God brings back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.” God is not trough with the nation of Israel. He will again deal with Israel as a nation.

Psalm 54 – God Hears, God Helps

David had not bothered the Ziphites, yet they turned against him to win favor with King Saul. The world does not love God’s people and even strangers will create problems for you while you seek to serve the Lord.

Do what David did; pray for God to take charge, protect you and vindicate you against your enemies. God hears and God helps. When the answer comes, be sure to take time to praise the Lord.

Sin Hurts the Sinner. Psalm 51 & 52

Psalm 51 – Sin Hurts the Sinner

David’s whole being was affected by his sin with Bathsheba. His mind, eyes, ears, heart and his spirit and mouth.  He lost fellowship with God and the joy of the Lord.

Are the pleasures of sin worth paying this great price?

Sin hurts others. Sin can bring tragic consequences to the lives of others. James 1:13-16, especially one’s family. David’s sin led to Uriah’s death. Bathsheba’s baby died. David’s daughter Tamar was violated by her brother Ammon, who was then killed by Absalom, who in turn was killed by Joab.

Sin hurts God. We hurt ourselves and others when we sin, but primarily our sins are against God. Sin makes us dirty. It is a rebellion against God’s holy law. Go to Calvary and see His son dying for the sins of the world. God is love and our selfish sins break His heart.

God is merciful and gracious and forgives when we come in repentance and faith. I John 1:9. David came to God with a broken heart and God forgave him.

Psalm 52 – Watch Your Tongue

Doeg was an evil man who found favor with king Saul by spying on David. I Samuel 21-22. When David learned what Doeg had done, he turned to God for help, for God is the One who can justly deal with our enemies.

The tongue can be a force for good or for evil. Doeg’s tongue was boastful, deceitful, and destructive like a sharp razor. David focused on the goodness of God, not the badness of men, because he knew that God’s justice would ultimately prevail.

Doeg looked like a strong tree, but he would be rooted up while David would be fresh and fruitful. God protected David’s name because David trusted God’s name.

Death and Money. Psalm 49

Psalm 49 – Death and Money & Psalm 50

“Do not boast in your wealth or trust in your wealth.” Your wealth cannot prevent death. Although money can buy medicine and professional help, it cannot buy God off when the death angel comes to claim you. Your wealth cannot go with you. The dead bodies of both man and beasts turn to dust in the grave, and the rich are not exempt from this end. When a believer dies the spirit goes to be with the Lord, but you cannot take your wealth with you. However, you can pay it forward with others in the name of the Lord. Matt. 6:19-34.

Your wealth cannot buy permanent fame. Men praise the rich while they live, honor them when they die and then forget them. The rich man can build himself a monument, but they cannot make people remember him.

The believer’s assurance of the future coming of Christ is what conquers death and makes life worth living.

Psalm 50 – God is Judge, Witness, and Jury

God brings an indictment against two kinds of “religious sinners.”

Insincere Worshipers. He indicts His people who offer sacrifices insincerely- their worship is just an empty routine and hope to “earn” God’s blessings. God does not need the things we give Him, but we need to give Him spiritual sacrifice of thanksgiving, praise and obedience.

Hypocritical Worshipers. They profess one thing and practice another. They are guilty of theft, adultery, deceit, and slander. They think that God’s silence means escape from punishment, but they are wrong.

Judgment begins with God’s people, not with the lost world.

Focus on God. Psalm 46-48

Psalm 46 – Focus on God

When things are changing and threatening around you focus your attention on God. He is with you (His presence), He is a refuge (His protection); He helps you (his power). Your world may be shaken with hardships, but He has a river to give you peace. You may be in the midst of battles, but He will end the war victoriously.

“Be still” means to “take your hands off, relax.” God knows what He is doing, and His timing is perfect. When it is all over, He will be exalted, and you will be blessed.

Psalm 47 His Great Victory

We don’t know what military victory the Psalmist was celebrating, but as believers today, we walk in Christ’ spiritual victory. Like Joshua we submit to our Captain and trust Him to win the battle. Joshua 5:13-15. That is something to shout about!

His great throne is a picture of the ascension of our Lord, returning to heaven and sitting at the right hand of God! Satan may be the god of this age, but Jesus is King of all the earth.

His kingdom is a spiritual kingdom today, but He still rules in the affairs of men. One day, Christ will reign on earth, and His people shall reign with Him.

Psalm 48 – Deliverance of Jerusalem

To Christian believers, Jerusalem and Mount Zion speak of  “the Jerusalem above” and the heavenly Zion where their citizenship is recorded.

It is the City of God, the Holy City, beautiful and joyful. But to the enemy who does not know the Lord, it is an awesome place that speaks of judgement.

It is a place of God’s loving kindness and righteousness, where His name is praised and His people rejoice. We are not in the Holy city yet, but we can still enjoy, “the powers of the age to come”. “Little faith will take your soul to heaven,” said Charles Spurgeon, “but great faith will bring heaven to your soul.”

The Coming of Christ. Psalm 45

Psalm 45 – The Coming of Christ

There is something the Psalmist must say and wishes he could tell it, because his tongue moves faster than his pen. This is a Psalm which is occupied with the person of Christ. “But we all, with open face, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Cor. 3:18

This is a picture of Christ coming forward, not as Savior, but as the King at His second coming. When Christ returns, He is going to find the world in rebellion. The Antichrist will be in power. He will be persecuting God’s people, both the remnant of Israel and that great company of Gentiles who turned to God. The Lord is riding to victory, in truth, meekness, and righteousness. These are eternal principles of our Lord’s kingdom.

He is going to rule in righteousness. “When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the angels with him, then he shall sit upon the throne of His glory.” Matthew 25:31.

The first time He came, He came as a Prophet – the Messenger and message of God – which refers to the past. In our day He is our Great High Priest at the right hand of God; that is His present ministry. But His second coming will be as King, the Messiah. This is for the future.

He came to this earth that our joy might be full. And it was for “the joy that was set before Him” that He endured the cross.

We are to leave the world. We are not to love the world. We have been saved out of it. We are to cling to the Lord.

The church is to be made beautiful. All sin will be removed.
