Psalm
132 – The City of David
It
was a difficult time as the Jews tried to rebuild their temple, their city, and
their nation, and their beloved King David had been involved in these
endeavors. The returned exiles wanted God to remember His covenant with David
and restore their land.
David
yearned to build the temple, but the Lord chose his son Solomon instead.
However, David provided the plans for the temple (1 Chron, 28:11-19) and much
of the wealth needed.
God
promised that David’s line would continue on the throne (2 Sam. 7), but now
Israel was without a king, in fact, there would be no king until Jesus came,
and they would reject Him. One day, He will return and restore David’s throne
(Luke 1:30-33)
Jerusalem
was in ruins, but it was the City of David and would not be forgotten by the
Lord. He would dwell there, bless the people, and give them joy. He would restore
power (the horn) and light (the lamp) and make the city a testimony to nations.
When
the going is tough, remember those feeble Jews who sacrificed to restore what
sin had destroyed. They prepared the way for the Son of God who came to their
city and temple and gave His life for the sins of the world.
Psalm
133 – Unity
It
is one thing for a group of people to journey together to Jerusalem for a feast
and quite something else for them to live together day after day. Abraham and
Lot, Isaac and his family, Jacob and Laban, and Joseph’s brothers remind us
that brethren do not always live together in unity.
Unity
must come down from above, like the oil running down Aaron’s beard and bathing
the twelve jewels on the breastplate (Ex, 29:5-7), or like the dew descending
on the mountains, You can manufacture uniformity by manipulating people and
exerting pressure, but true unity can only come from God by the Spirit.
Unity
is good like the dew and produces fruitfulness. It is pleasant like oil and
produces a lovely fragrance. Divisions among God’s people produce opposite
results.
