Song of Solomon 3 - A Troubled Night

Song of Solomon 3 – A Troubled Night

Waking and finding Solomon gone, the Shulamite missed him, signaling her sense of incompleteness without him. In a secure relationship, the partners are free to surrender their independence and be mutually dependent, increasing their oneness.

There are times when the Lord comes to you, but there are also times when you should seek Him.

Lonely for her husband, the Shulamite set out to look for him around the city. Couples should be concerned when they no longer miss their spouse when they are apart. Press on until you enjoy Him personally.

Solomon returned from a royal event in a royal procession of state. He was wearing a crown, signifying that he was married. His return stirred up the Shulamite’s passion for him and she probably found a way to squeeze in beside him.

The church is awaiting the Lord’s glorious coming, but as we wait, we experience His love and Joy. (John 15:9-11). Find your delight in Him today and the joys of heaven will be greater.

Solomon returned with a retinue of 60 of his best men with weapons drawn, a public statement of the power and protection he extended to his bride and all of Israel.

God’s protection is ever present.

Song of Solomon 2 - Admiration and Affirmation

Song of Solomon 2 – Admiration and Affirmation

Solomon and his wife began a habit of speaking admiration and affirmation as should every married couple. The Shulamite saw herself as a wild autumn flower out of season and out of place. A country girl among the royal elite. The lily of the valley is a delicate white blossom, associated with weddings. For Solomon to call her a lily among thorns expressed that the Shulamite’s beauty made all other women undesirable by comparison.

In speaking of Solomon as a tree unique among the others in the forest, the Shulamite had set Solomon apart for herself from all others. This is the nature of holy matrimony. Husband and wife reserve themselves for each other and together are considered set apart unto God.

Solomon understood how to delight his true love’s heart. The banner represents Solomon’s claim of the Shulamite as his beloved, his protective love and spiritual blessing. Under his banner, she felt safe to be physically and emotionally vulnerable.

Solomon teaches that there is a right time for intimacy within the context of marriage. The Shulamite charged the daughters of Jerusalem to restrain themselves, warning them not to cross the line before the right time, before finding their own mates.

Rock pigeons were known to build nests in towering rock clefts far away from humanity. She told Solomon she longed to be alone with him in an isolated place where the world could not intrude.

The oneness of marriage is a sacred trust and the willingness to share one’s deepest self with one another is at the core. (Gen 2:24; I Cor. 7:3, 4).

You never know when the Lord will come to you for a time of communion. No obstacle stands between Him and you except the ones you put up yourself. When you spend time in loving communion with Christ, it is like a springtime after the winter and the dawning of a new day. No better husband than the one we have in Christ.

Song of Solomon 1 - The Banquet

Song of Solomon 1 – The Banquet

This special song was for Solomon’s queen. It teaches that sex is God’s gift in marriage. Solomon is portrayed as the Shepherd lover or king. The Shulamite was his Queen, it means the perfect, the peaceful. Jewish tradition pictures Jehovah’s love for Israel, and Christians picture it as Christ’ love for the church, as well as the individual believer. (John 14:21-24).

Their love was admired by others. Intimacy in marriage starts with respect. The virgins serve as a sort of literary chorus to this love story. The Shulamite longed to be all she could be for the one she loved. We should long to be all that we can be for Jesus Christ to enjoy a deeper communion with Him. Be sure your love for Him is expressed in both words and deeds.

By removing her veil, a garment not commonly worn in Israel, the Shulamite expressed a desire to share in Solomon’s work as a shepherd. Your love relationship must never become stagnant because He wants to lead you into deeper experiences in His banquet hall. Never be afraid to follow Him, He will never lead you astray. Faithful service is one way to show Him your love.

Solomon had 1400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen from Egypt. A team of stallions pulled each chariot, led by a “boss mare” that they eagerly followed. Solomon expresses his love in the most powerful way possible, telling his beloved that she is the beautiful mare who runs with the stallions, special and worthy of pursuit.

Solomon draws others to share in his praise for his beloved. What we say about our spouses in public reflects on them and us.  Follow His flock and His footsteps and you will walk in paths of loving fellowship (John 21:15-25).

A costly perfume sent a signal to the king that the Shulamite was ready to share their bed. Just as these two did, married couples can and should use body language and praise to foster private intimacy.

Ecclesiastes 12 - Seek God in Early Life

Ecclesiastes 12- Seek God in Early Life

In their inexperience, young people can easily build misconceptions about life and put off getting serious about God. Solomon challenges them to give God the energy of their youth, to commit to God now, rather than offering Him the last dregs when they are old. Solomon then tells older people to embrace the aging process, lest they become embittered about a wasted life.

Solomon catalogues many of the realities of old age in hopes of urging the young to maximize their opportunities. Eyesight is darkened. Pains and affliction are continuous. Vigor is sapped. The elderly lose their teeth. Sleep becomes scarce; little things disturb. The bodily organs once used for singing can no longer perform. The hair grows gray. The lightest thing is a burden. The ambitions of youth are tasteless. (2 Cor. 4:16-18).

No matter how old you are, you are never too old to get wiser, or to act like a fool. You can read many books about many subjects but focus on understanding God’s word and living a life of wisdom.

God’s word keeps shepherding people forward within the boundaries of His love and providence, through instruction, insight, and inspiration. The goads were devices to direct animals on a certain path, while the nails refer to setting up the boundaries of a sheep pen or securing a tent. His words are like nails, you can depend on them. They are goads: they prod you to do His will.

If you fear God, you need not to fear anything else; you are safe in the Father’s will. So, live that God could publish a book about you and you would not be ashamed for the whole world to read it. Those who love God keep His commandments. A true Christian makes obedience a faithful obsession, not an option. Live with eternity in view, and the ravages of time will not distress you.

Ecclesiastes 11- The Value of Diligence

Ecclesiastes 11 – The Value of Diligence

Because life between earth and eternity is uncertain, Solomon encourages the faithful to be diligent in their relationship and involvements while they can, being benevolent, bold, and strong for the Lord, and working hard every day.

Solomon owned a fleet of merchant ships (I Kings 9:26-28) that helped add to his wealth. Life is like that; You must launch out by faith if you hope to get anywhere. Limiting yourself to one ship may lead to disaster, so trust God to guide you in several endeavors.

The weather is rarely right for what the farmer wants to do, but he does it anyway. You cannot explain the growth of the unborn child, but that does not stop people from having families.

It is important to never take for granted the coming of a new day. Just because a person is here today does not guarantee tomorrow or that the world will be the same. One of the realities of this earth is that life can change in an instant.

Solomon encourages youth to enjoy life instead of enduring it as they wait to get to the next phase. Yet he also reminds them that all their actions will be judged. In the end, even childhood and youth are vanity. (Psalm 39:5)

Ecclesiastes 10 - Folly or Wisdom?

Ecclesiastes 10- Folly or Wisdom?

Foolishness in small matters can have big consequences. Seemingly little decisions and actions can ruin a person’s dignity and reputation (2 Cor. 5:6). The wiser you are, the more damage even a little folly can do to both your character and your reputation. The world seems to honor the fool and humiliate the honorable, but that is no reason for you to permit even a little folly in your life.

Ego-driven leaders believe they can rightfully oppress others with cruel language. The word error means something done without considering the facts or consequences, a mistake. If you guard your heart, you will avoid folly in your work and your words. Leaders who live for themselves are wasting time, but eventually, their folly will catch up with them.

Positions and jobs are not always awarded based on merit. Unfair leaders put unqualified people in office while ignoring those who should be leading.

Careless laborers make silly mistakes and expend energy, Wisdom can prevent waste of time and resources. “Don’t work harder, work smarter!”

Solomon is admonishing the wisdom of controlling one’s words. People must learn to think before they speak.

In their ignorance and immaturity, childish leaders govern foolishly, feasting for pleasure rather than to strengthen themselves for what is ahead. Solomon pronounces woe on a nation who is led by such a person, for that nation will crumble.

Ecclesiastes 9 - One Event Happens to All

Ecclesiastes 9 – One Event Happens to All

Solomon observes that death is a great leveler. One’s station in life does not matter, every person will die someday unless the Lord returns first. (I Cor. 15:26). You can avoid thinking of it, but you cannot avoid the appointment. (Heb. 9:27). The only way to prepare for death is to receive God’s gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:16).

All who live still have hope. Every day is a celebration (Phil. 4:4). God wants us to enjoy feasts, and family, and the work He has called you to do.

With death in view, people should also work, live, and love with all their might. Marriage is a covenant that is not meant to be broken.  Life is unpredictable, but it need not be irrational. Let God give you wisdom to use each day profitably for His glory.

The most skillful or most gifted does not always win, sometimes the outcome involves timing and opportunity. Sometimes life just happens. Only God controls life, and death is what reminds people of that. God is the only guarantee in life.

Even though wisdom is powerful enough to save a city, People tend to forget the wise one if they are poor. The thought of death should energize you, not paralyze you (Phil.1:19-26)

Ecclesiastes 8 - Obey Authorities for God's Sake.

Ecclesiastes 8 – Obey Authorities for God’s Sake

True humility is recognizing you do not know all things, living with what you do not like, and enjoying what you cannot explain. You will not always get things your way, so learn to deal wisely with disagreements. A shining face is better than a stern (impudent) face, and it is wisdom that makes the face shine. Learn to smile and laugh.

Obeying the king is not just an exercise in humility, it is ultimately a sign of allegiance to God. (Rom. 13:1,2). As much as possible, submit to authority. Do what you are told and keep your promises. Do not get angry and be a partner in anything wrong. “We ought to obey God rather than men” Acts 5:29. Wise people have discernment and know the right time to speak and to act. (James 1:5)

These things we cannot change and must humbly accept: death, distress, deception and defiance. Rather than railing against such things, the wise person seeks to change only what can be changed.

Solomon recommends that we enjoy life, despite the things that cannot be comprehended. This is not eat, drink and be merry like the world, but submission and celebration motivated by the faith-filled outlook of the children of God. They understand that life is a special gift from the Almighty, and He gives His people all things to enjoy. No one can control or predict adversity or prosperity, but every person can receive each day’s joys as God’s gifts. There are many injustices and mysteries in this life. Leave them with God and do what He calls you to do. There are still many enjoyable things in life if you do not make yourself the most important person to be pleased. Put God first, and serve others, and life will become meaningful and joyful.

God has concealed certain things from us; He knows life’s secrets. Because He is infinite and we are finite, we owe Him our worship (Phil. 2:5-11)

Ecclesiastes 7 - The Value of Practical Wisdom

Ecclesiastes 7 – The Value of Practical Wisdom

Sometimes adversity is advantageous. Wisdom’s perspective helps believers handle prosperity, providence, and the puzzles of life.

Wisdom is forged in the fire of mourning and trouble, while fools live in the house of continual mirth. If you have a good name, your death will be better than your birth because nothing will be able to hurt your name. In that sense, the ending is better than the beginning.

Rather than be enamored with the praise of people who do not really care about them, Christians should be attentive to the rebuke of the wise ones who love them. (Prov. 10:17, 12:1). Sorrow and rebuke can teach you lessons that will not be learned any other way. (Prov. 27:5-6).

Solomon says the hard way is better than the easy way and today is better than yesterday.  God gives prosperity and adversity, and He knows how much and how long. We live in the present and learn to profit from both pain and pleasure. Gd never allows our journey here on earth to become so easy that we lose sight of heaven, where God promises to wipe every tear from our eyes. (Rev. 21:4).

A bribe is a shortcut to getting one’s way and will corrupt a person’s integrity. The good old days only exist in the minds of people who have decided to avoid living in the present.

Wisdom provides power. The wise one fears the Lord, therefore, no fear of man and nor flattery by man can cause their confidence to falter. When a person knows God they can be strong. (Prov. 21:22). Do not claim to be righteous and wise. You are still on the way and have not arrived yet. (Phil. 3:12-16). That is why God balances your life with trials and triumphs: to keep you from getting proud and set in your ways.

Ecclesiastes 6 - Accept and Enjoy What You Have

Ecclesiastes 6 – Accept and Enjoy what You Have

The man experiences a full and extended life, yet without being satisfied with goodness; the child, little or no life at all, to have abundance without appreciation is meaningless.

A job will not satisfy the soul, and the mind cannot replace the heart, when people stand before God, neither their commissions nor their continuing education will sway Him. All we do in life is preserve our life. We work to feed our bodies, we sleep to keep our bodies healthy, we exercise to keep our life going. Yet, even the foolish man does the same. Ultimate joy is knowing Him.

Sight versus desire is Solomon’s version of a “bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” God does not condemn dreaming big, but no one should wait for things to get better before they start enjoying what God has provided.

Everyone’s destiny has been determined, and ordained by God, so it is nonsense to foolishly argue with Him about how things are. Only God knows what will happen in anyone’s life. That is why He is worthy to be trusted. He sees around all the corners that to humanity are just blind turns. Life passes by like a shadow, and you do not know the future. In the will of God, make the most of today’s opportunities and blessings, and you will be ready for what lies ahead.

Ecclesiastes 5- Fear God, Keep Your Vows

Ecclesiastes 5 Fear God, Keep Your Vows.

Solomon warns the one who goes to the house of God to behave reverently, because obedience to God is better than sacrifices (I Samuel 15:22).

We are to think clearly and not allow our mouth to cause trouble. A person should never casually make a vow (promise) to, or bargain with God. Hasty words and lying words do not please God, nor will He accept excuses when you fail to keep your vow. Be honest with God (I John1:5-10).

People in power are prone to look out for their own interests rather than the needs of the oppressed. Yet as bad as government can be, it is better than not having any ruling authority (Rom 13:3). The Jews in Solomon’s day had to put up with selfish bureaucrats who had to be paid off before they would help. Certainly, we should work to see justice done, but do not be disappointed if many of your efforts fail.

Many people desire to be rich, thinking they will have no more worries. A wealthy person may appear to live well, but “the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep”. The rich lie awake worrying about losing their money, while poor laborers sleep soundly. The chains of worry often ruin any true enjoyment. God would have us to be content whatever our financial status, for all wealth belongs to Him.

Solomon was one of the wealthiest men who ever lived. He knew what it was like to have all the riches and wealth a person could desire. Only God can supply the wisdom to know what to do with what a person has.  Money does not satisfy or guarantee peace. Be thankful that God not only shares His gifts with you but also enables you to enjoy them.

Ecclesiastes 4 - The Value of a Friend

Ecclesiastes 4 – The Value of a Friend

Solomon observed that the oppressors of this world have all the power, but neither the oppressed nor the oppressor have a comforter. So, the dead, being free from oppression are in a more favorable condition than the living, who continue on under oppression. He saw adversity and inequality, but he realized no one can make it alone.

Solomon describes two kinds of fools, one of laziness and one of excessive toil. Ultimately greed promotes riches over relationships (Prov 16:8). The real tragedy is when a person gains wealth and has no one to share it with. The solitary worker may get all the profits, but he is so busy making money that he has no time to enjoy it.  A handful with quietness is about a modest amount of goods or property acquired through calm, reasonable activity; Overexertion leads to aggravation and anxiety, abundance can cause sleepless nights. In moderation is peace and contentment.

There are risks in society as well as rewards, but the rewards are greater. If you fall and break a bone, or if you are in danger, you are thankful to have a friend at your side to help you. We all need times of solitude, but nobody can be independent. Life is tough enough even when we have friends to encourage us. It is hard to do it alone.

Ecclesiastes 3 - Everything Has its Time

Ecclesiastes 3 – Everything Has its Time

Every season of a person’s life is determined and purposed by God. He is ultimately involved in every beginning and ending, every growth and decline.

God has set the boundaries of the harvest, and one’s observance of them affects the bounty. In all of life, to do anything out of season limits the prospects for full prosperity.

Killing is not a criminal act in war or self-defense, but murder is always against God’s law. (Ex. 20:13).

A time to tear refers to tearing of the garment in mourning or hearing someone blaspheme the name of God. God is in control of life and keeps everything in balance. You feel pain in bereavement, but joy in birth. You are not always weeping, and not always laughing. This gave Job strength in his trials.  (Job 1:21).

We must always discern as to when to speak and when to be silent.

What God has put in the human heart cannot be discovered or fulfilled through the experiences of this world because people are made for the next (Rom. 8:22). Still, God has given us opportunities that He intends for His people to redeem (Eph. 5:16). Those who believe even in difficult times discover that God’s plan is good.

To spend life worrying about the mysteries of God means failing to rejoice in the gift of God, the good of all one’s labor. Do not fear life, fear God. God’s works are forever means that nothing can be added to them or taken away.

Wickedness often resides where judgment and righteousness should be, What balances the scale of justice is death, everyone is at the grave; eternal judgment will be just. (2 Thess. 1:6-9). Until then, people must not be deterred by evil but seek to enjoy what is in front of them, knowing that God is God.

Ecclesiastes 2 - The Vanity of Pleasure

Ecclesiastes 2 – The Vanity of Pleasure

Solomon indulged in everything the world had to offer; wild living, wisdom, work, and wealth. Even these, not designed by God to provide an ultimate source of meaning, could not fulfill him.

No one in Israel’s history was richer in possibilities for various pleasures than Solomon’s, and no person was ever in a better position to make the most of them. Yet his attempts to gratify the flesh did not gratify his soul (Proverbs 14:13). “What spoils the pleasures of life for us is our hunger to get out of them more than they can deliver.” (Derek Kidner). God’s people will never know joy or learn satisfaction unless it is understood as a gift from God. In Him, everything makes sense.

Solomon was known for his extravagant construction project, including the glorious temple that was named after him (I Kings 7:1-12). Yet even he could never build enough buildings or make them great enough to fulfill the longing of the soul.

According to I Kings 10:14 Solomon received 666 talents of gold each year. The special treasures he gathered for himself came from kings and the provinces.

Those who think ultimate, external meaning is in the accomplishment of life will be disappointed. No matter how carefully they manage their riches, they cannot control what the person who comes after them will do with those riches. Believers must not slip into the mind-set of evaluating life on what can be accumulated. Instead, they should set their affections on things that are above.  (Psalm 49:10).

Life must be understood for what it is, a gift from God and not be mistaken as the ultimate end. While life offers a measure of enjoyment, full and permanent joy is found only in God. So the best thing is to change one’s perspective and be satisfied with what we have. (I Tim. 6:17).

Those who decide to serve God are the first in line to receive wisdom, knowledge and joy (James 1:5).

Ecclesiastes 1 - Vanity of Life

Ecclesiastes 1 – Vanity of Life.

Solomon was on a mission to find the meaning of life.

While there is some comfort in nature’s unchanging cycles, their repetitiveness reinforces that there is really nothing new in this life.

All of life is vanity. The totality of human effort and even human accomplishment is utterly futile. Solomon’s conclusion was that life is meaningless when people do not acknowledge God. The only way to any satisfaction or joy in this life, though incomplete until eternity, is to recognize Him as the Giver in the midst of everything.

The persistent movements and rhythms of nature do provide an order to life on earth, but they really change nothing long term. Therefore it is pointless to live only for this life, for there will be no remembrance of what has been in the later generations.

A person’s life can be filled with meaning when they decide to be satisfied with the things God has provided.

The flow of generations from one to another does not change the face of humanity, just as the ceaseless flow of rivers into the sea does not change the sea.

Unless one recognizes that God gives all good things for human satisfaction, the repetitive cycles of earthly existence, like the sun hurrying across the horizon each day, only to arrive there again in the morning, will seem monotonous and futile.

Solomon goes from the futility of life to the frustration of life. Nothing is fulfilling or fresh, and nothing satisfies, without recognizing God’s provision (Prov. 27:20). Solomon knew this firsthand, because once he forsook the God of his youth, he lost his satisfaction and ability to enjoy good. Solomon forgot that God broke into creation and done new things. He stopped the sun for Joshua (Josh 10:12) and moved it back for Hezekiah (Isa. 38:8). He opened both the sea and the river for his people. God oversees the world and human history, and what He does is not in vain.

Even Solomon’s wisdom did not provide meaning. In fact, he discovered that increasing knowledge only increases a person’s sense of futility, because wisdom and knowledge do not satisfy. Our wisdom and experience cannot explain the mysteries of life or solve life’s problems. Knowledge can increase sorrow if you leave out the God of wisdom and the wisdom of God. Satan promises knowledge apart from God (Gen. 2:17, 3:1-5), but it leads only to sin and death. Be sure to grow in grace as you grow in knowledge, or knowledge will make you critical and cynical.

Proverbs 31 - Instructions From a Mother

Proverbs 31 – Instructions From a Mother

Lemuel was a king, and his mother gave him these instructions.

Who can find a virtuous wife? (Ruth 3:11). The heart of her husband refers to his mind or inner self more than his emotions. He trusts her and her tenacity, knowing she will follow through on anything she attempts. His commitment to her grows out of his confidence in her strength, abilities, and resourcefulness. She is effective and successful in all that she does.

The picture is of merchant ships returning from afar with their wares. The element of joy and glad surprises in what the woman does.

Making preparations for leaner times like winter is one way a woman cares for her loved ones.

Charm can refer to one’s behavior or figure. Beauty has to do with the contour of the face or the context of the countenance. A woman should be praised, not for her appearance but for her spiritual maturity. This is what truly lasts.

Everything about this woman is praiseworthy.

Look at her hands. She is a willing worker, and her work is fruitful. She cooks, sews, manages her property, and even plants a garden. Her family needs nothing and she generously gives to the poor.

Her mouth speaks wisdom, and she gives wise counsel to her family and friends. Her eyes are alert to opportunities and to the needs of the home.

Most important her heart is faithful to the Lord and to her husband. It is no surprise that she is praised by her children and her husband and by her works.

Proverbs 30 - Agur - A Wise Man

Proverbs 30 – Agur – A Wise Man

Agur’s reverence for God and His Word proves that he was a wise man worth listening to. He had the right attitude toward wealth and family and he was concerned about a generation that had turned away from God. He seemed to be a humble, observant and inquisitive man.

Some things are never satisfied. The leech wants more blood, the grave wants more dead, the barren mother yearns for children, the earth thirsts for more water, and the fire wants more fuel. (Prov. 26:20-21). Dissatisfaction creates many problems in our world. The extremes of poverty and riches bring with them certain temptations. Abundance tempts people to feel unrealistically self-sufficient. Need tempts them to stop trusting Gold and to resort to acts that harm others.

Some things never lose their wonder. Science may explain the flight of birds, the movements of snakes, the currents of the ocean, and human sexuality, but that does not take away their wonder. Life and Love are not explained by laboratory experiments or the formulas of the experts. As you go through life, do not lose your sense of wonder.

Some things always seem to cause trouble. Servants do not always know how to handle the luxury and authority of the throne (Prov. 1910), so they create problems instead of solving them. Those who cause trouble tend to curse their parents, are self-righteous, exude arrogance and oppress the poor and needy.

Some small things are very big in wisdom. The ants are wise to prepare, the badgers to protect, the locusts to cooperate, and the spiders to get into the best places and hold on.

Some things are made for honor. The lion, greyhound and male goat are regal because God made them that way, each has its own kind of honor. The king is regal because of his office and his official army. If you exalt yourself you will have only artificial honor. If you let God fulfill in you the purpose for which He made you, you will have true honor. A proper bearing in life comes from functioning as God created a person to function.

Proverbs 29 - Bad Company

Proverbs 29 – Bad Company

Bad company is a person who will abuse, and pull others down, destroying their names and lives. Bad company is more than foolish; it dishonors and disgraces oneself and one’s parents, causing grief. Some examples of Bad company in the Bible are Korah, Dathan, Abiram, Belshazzar and Jezebel and many more. “He that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.”

David was a good King. What we need today is a righteous man who will stand for the right at any price. The Lord Jesus will reign in righteousness.

A fool vents all his feelings, yet many things are better left unsaid, and many opinions are better left unspoken, not only for the sake of others but for the sake of one’s own well-being. People who are given to flattery do not tell what is really upon their hearts. It is dangerous to believe in flattery. A fool will tell you everything, a wise man holds back and is very careful about what he says.

Without the guidance of divine revelation, people abandon themselves to their own sinful ways. Spiritual discernment is one of the gifts that God has given to the church, that is, an understanding of the Word of God.

The devil is the source of all anxiety, and his goal is to confuse and confound so that the fear of others becomes a snare. Thankfully the Savior of the soul replaces fear with faith so that whoever trusts in Him is safe. The one who fears God will not fear human beings. (Luke 12:4).

Proverbs 28 - Material Blessings

Proverbs 28 – Material Blessings

As crime increases, the government must pass more laws and hire more people to enforce them. When you break God’s law, you promote the wicked; when you obey His law, you promote righteousness and enable God to answer your prayers.

Wicked rulers are like fierce animals who drive the righteous into hiding. This includes ignorant leaders and those grasping for money. The people in that day could not vote to replace leaders or correct laws, so all they could do was protect themselves.

When laws and leaders are unjust, usually the poor suffer and the rich profit. But even a poor person can have integrity and understanding and faith that God will meet his needs.

The person who obtains a fortune dishonestly often loses it to those who are inclined toward helping the less fortunate.

David knew from experience that he could not hide his sins (Ps. 51); they always are revealed sooner or later (Num. 32:23). Thankfully, as David learned, confession results in God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Material wealth was a sign of blessing in the Old Testament, but the New Testament focuses on “giving” not ‘having”.

Proverbs does not unconditionally promise material blessing to those who work hard, but it highlights the truth that prosperity is often the result of one’s willingness to be diligent and industrious. Willingness is a sign of wisdom.

God has promised many blessings for people who give to the poor. For one, He makes sure they will not lack what they need. Any time God blesses someone, it is so they can be a blessing to others.

Proverbs 27 - Fools vs. Wise

Proverbs 27 - Fools vs. Wise

What separates the fools from the wise is that the wise know not to boast about tomorrow, since only the Lord knows what a day may bring. (James 4:1-16).

Trust is the foundation of all successful relationships. At times a friend might wound with constructive criticism. The short-term pain is for long-term gain. Flattery from an enemy, however, may feel good but may end badly. Friendship cannot be built on deception or envy. We must encourage each other with loving counsel and honest praise. How we respond to praise reveals our character. Praise brought out the best in David, but the worst in Saul. (I Sam. 18:1-16).

Normally a brother would be helpful in a time of adversity, but if those relative lives far away, a neighbor can stand in a family member’s place. Friends should be faithful to each other, but you also need to be loyal to family and neighbors. You never can tell when you may need them, or they may need you! Not everybody will become a close friend, so do not get so exclusive that you neglect other people.

The son is urged to seek wisdom because of the benefit that will accrue to his parents. Having a child who is wise is evidence of good child-rearing and that a father can answer his critics.

The wise see trouble coming and do everything possible to avoid it, while the foolish proceed headlong into danger.

Contentiousness in a woman is particularly dangerous because it undermines both her and her husband.

The mutual benefit that comes to the individual who receives and gives corrections in community improves the quality of both. Wisdom is neither acquired nor maintained in isolation.

The face that is reflected in a pool of water says very little about a person. A glimpse into the heart, discerning what a person loves and values, reveals their true character.

Proverbs 26 - People You Should Avoid

Proverbs 26 – People You Should Avoid

Solomon names some people you should avoid, and the first is a fool. A fool should be corrected so the person will not conclude that they are right. However, not all of a fool’s comments deserve a reply. The wise should use discernment and discretion to know when to respond and when not to. (Matt 16:1-4). If you answer a fool, do not stoop to his level of folly or you will make him think you elevated him to wisdom.

One who binds a stone in a sling is doing something counterproductive and potentially dangerous. Similarly, one who expects a fool to accomplish something honorable is hoping for the impossible. Giving a foolish person true responsibility is also likely to cause damage to those around him. The second person is the sluggard who has excuses for everything. He has motion but no progress and is even too lazy to feed himself. You are wasting your time trying to help him.

A wise person does not repeat their mistakes and poor choices, but a fool does, just as a dog return to his vomit. (2 Peter 2:22).

Conceit and pride are the basis for all other sins. If left unharnessed in the heart, a person’s pride and self-sufficiency will play right into Satan’s hands, bringing their downfall. (Luke 18:11,12).

Careless words and deceitful words produce strife and distrust, even when they do not destroy a relationship. Deceit leaves a mark on the deceived one’s heart. Flattery involves complimenting someone excessively to manipulate or complimenting someone insincerely. The troublemaker is the last person Solomon says to avoid. They are meddlers, pranksters and talebearers and deceivers.

Proverbs 25 - Exercise Restraint

Proverbs 25 – Exercise Restraint

The fact that God, who knows all things, has chosen to conceal certain things from humankind should cause people to further glorify Him. (Rom. 11:33). He is finite, we are not.

We are to uphold the wisdom – and beauty- of exercising restraint in everything from conversations with authority to legal disputes to neighborly conduct. To settle disputes out of court is wise. But it is especially advisable for Christians, because to drag someone hastily into court hinders their witness. (I Cor. 6:1-11). That is what the world does; God’s people should act differently. The wise leader gets rid of evil associates and does what is right. Humility leads to honor, but self-promotion leads to shame.

The right words spoken at the right time in the right setting can be pleasing and beautiful (Isa 50:4). Do not be a neighborhood pest, troublemaker. Be dependable.

Long forbearance means patience, self-restraint, or moderation. In other words, a person who wants to persuade should not talk too long or say too much. A gentle tongue can be very powerful.

To help one’s enemy is not a natural inclination, but here it is commanded. (Matt. 5:44).

A backbiting tongue produces anger and can ruin a person’s work, character, and livelihood. (Psalm 101:5).

A curse was commonly believed to be activated once it was uttered. The Bible teaches that the power of a blessing or a curse depends on the power of the one behind it.

Proverbs 24 - Wisdom of God

Proverbs 24 -Wisdom of God

Through the wisdom of God, families and strong foundations are built.

The wise person is not completely self-reliant. Instead, they look to a multitude of counselors to seek to overcome any difficulty or personal weakness. Wise strategy is always more important than strength. The wise person builds while others tear down and is strong for the battles of life.

Those who faint or quit in times of struggle show that they do not have strength of character, a fruit that comes from possessing wisdom. There is no need to faint and if you fall, you need not stay down. The wise person seeks to deliver people who have been unjustly condemned. If you hide your head and fail to help when you can, God will judge you (James 4:17). At the same time be careful not to rejoice when an enemy falls or pay back those who have hurt you.

God is represented as one who weighs the hearts.

To be anxious of wicked people who enjoy temporary prosperity is a waste of energy, for their future is bleak.

A kiss is comparable to a right answer; because it brings people closer and builds true communion. Speaking the kind of truth that enables growth and development honors a relationship.

The wise person labors while there is opportunity and does not live for ease and pleasure. Follow the example of your Master (John 9:4).

Proverbs 23 - Sins to Avoid

Proverbs 23 – Sins to Avoid

Who people are is not ultimately defined by their words but by their hearts. Even though a miser may say, Eat and drink!, his gift of sickening food exposes the selfish, stingy attitude within. Do not get friendly with miserly people. No matter how much they offer you, their hearts are not with you. It is not the food on the table but the love in the heart that makes fellowship real and lasting.

A Christian home is especially equipped to prepare a young person for life and eternity and the reality of knowing God in a personal way. Biblical parental discipline often paves the way for making a lifelong commitment to Christ in one’s youth. Discipline your children so that they might have wisdom and bring you joy. No matter what other families do, do not envy sinners but trust the Lord and obey Him. Set a good example by respecting your parents.

Those who imbibe wine are used here to typify people who will tempt and influence someone with good morals to do wrong. Those who lead one of God’s children into addictive or detrimental habits should be avoided at all costs. (Isa. 5:22, Rom. 13:13). Do not mix with drunkards and gluttons lest you become like them. Do not even look at the drink lest you end up embarrassed and bruised.

The father’s urgent appeal relates to the dangers of sexual sin. He warns of two kinds of immoral women: the unmarried and the married. Sexual temptation is powerful, with devastating consequences, and men are very vulnerable in this area.

People who are given to drunkenness often find other excesses and negative habits cropping up in their lives, such as poverty, misery, immorality, or instability. Nothing is glamorous about addiction. Anesthetizing oneself will destroy a person’s life, undermining confidence, and respect, desensitizing them to others; and creating a black hole of despair.
