Proverbs 31 - Instructions From a Mother

Proverbs 31 – Instructions From a Mother

Lemuel was a king, and his mother gave him these instructions.

Who can find a virtuous wife? (Ruth 3:11). The heart of her husband refers to his mind or inner self more than his emotions. He trusts her and her tenacity, knowing she will follow through on anything she attempts. His commitment to her grows out of his confidence in her strength, abilities, and resourcefulness. She is effective and successful in all that she does.

The picture is of merchant ships returning from afar with their wares. The element of joy and glad surprises in what the woman does.

Making preparations for leaner times like winter is one way a woman cares for her loved ones.

Charm can refer to one’s behavior or figure. Beauty has to do with the contour of the face or the context of the countenance. A woman should be praised, not for her appearance but for her spiritual maturity. This is what truly lasts.

Everything about this woman is praiseworthy.

Look at her hands. She is a willing worker, and her work is fruitful. She cooks, sews, manages her property, and even plants a garden. Her family needs nothing and she generously gives to the poor.

Her mouth speaks wisdom, and she gives wise counsel to her family and friends. Her eyes are alert to opportunities and to the needs of the home.

Most important her heart is faithful to the Lord and to her husband. It is no surprise that she is praised by her children and her husband and by her works.
