Ecclesiastes
7 – The Value of Practical Wisdom
Sometimes
adversity is advantageous. Wisdom’s perspective helps believers handle prosperity, providence, and the puzzles of life.
Wisdom is forged in the fire of mourning and trouble,
while fools live in the house of continual mirth. If you have a good name, your
death will be better than your birth because nothing will be able to hurt your
name. In that sense, the ending is better than the beginning.
Rather than be enamored with the praise of people who
do not really care about them, Christians should be attentive to the rebuke of
the wise ones who love them. (Prov. 10:17, 12:1). Sorrow and rebuke can teach
you lessons that will not be learned any other way. (Prov. 27:5-6).
Solomon says the hard way is better than the easy way
and today is better than yesterday. God
gives prosperity and adversity, and He knows how much and how long. We live in
the present and learn to profit from both pain and pleasure. Gd never allows our
journey here on earth to become so easy that we lose sight of heaven, where God
promises to wipe every tear from our eyes. (Rev. 21:4).
A bribe is a
shortcut to getting one’s way and will corrupt a person’s integrity. The good
old days only exist in the minds of people who have decided to avoid living in
the present.
Wisdom provides power. The wise one fears the Lord,
therefore, no fear of man and nor flattery by man can cause their confidence to
falter. When a person knows God they can be strong. (Prov. 21:22). Do not claim
to be righteous and wise. You are still on the way and have not arrived yet.
(Phil. 3:12-16). That is why God balances your life with trials and triumphs:
to keep you from getting proud and set in your ways.
