Tis
Midnight; and on Olive’s Brow
It was the night before Christ’s crucifixion and He could
not sleep. He knew what was coming and the human side of Him was afraid. He
also knew that He would be with His Father. We all know we are going to die but
are fearful of how we will die. The disciples didn’t understand what was
happening with Him and could not keep watch. He was alone in His anguish;
except He knew God was with Him. That knowledge alone caused Him to say, “not
my will but Thine.”
Lyrics by William B. Tappan, arranged by William B. Bradbury
“”Tis midnight; and on Olive’s brow the star is dimmed
that lately shone; “Tis midnight in the garden now, the suffering Savior prays
alone.
“Tis midnight; and from all removed, the Savior wrestles
lone with fears; Even that disciples whom He loved heeds not His master’s grief
and tears.
“Tis midnight; and for others’ guilt the Man of Sorrows
weeps in blood; Yet He that has in anguish knelt is not forsaken by His God.
“Tis midnight; and from ether-plains is born the song
that angels know; Unheard by mortals are the strains that sweetly soothe the
Savior’s woe. Amen.”
