Psalm 105 – “Here am I, Send Me”

 

When you read the history of Israel, you are encouraged by God’s mighty and marvelous deeds for His needy people. (Rom. 15:4) You want to praise Him, rejoice in Him, seek Him, and tell others about Him.

God bound Himself by an oath to only one nation, Israel. He gave His promise to Abraham and then reaffirmed it to his descendants. The covenant was their assurance that they would inherit the land. God’s new covenant people have the assurance that their future inheritance is secure (Matt. 26:26-29).

God sent Joseph to Egypt to preserve Jacob’s family so they could become a nation. He sent Moses to Egypt to deliver His people. He sent Aaron to assist Moses and serve as high priest for a sinful people. God always has a man or woman ready to send when a job must be done. He wants to hear you say, “here am I, send me.” (Isa. 6:8).

 

Psalm 106 –  Consider God’s Goodness

 

Considering God’s goodness to Israel, you would have expected the nation to submit to Him and serve Him gratefully.  Instead they sinned and had to be disciplined many times.

God delivered Israel from Egypt, but they soon forgot His mercy and ignored His counsel. He gave them manna, and they craved meat. They criticized their leaders. They worshiped a golden idol and would have been destroyed had Moses not interceded for them.

They came to the border of the Promised Land and refused to go in. While wandering in the wilderness, they compromised with the heathen nations. Their stubborn attitude even made Moses sin. Once in the land, they compromised with the wicked nations, and God had to chasten them repeatedly.

Were it not for His covenant, God would have destroyed them. But He forgave them and allowed them to have many new beginnings. Finally He had to disperse them among the Gentiles.

Psalm 103- Forgiveness and Renewal

 

Forgiveness is like healing when you are sick (1 Pet. 2:24), relief when you are burdened (Lev. 16:20-23), and reconciliation when you have hurt someone. All of this comes because Jesus died for your sins on the cross and you have trusted Him.

God redeemed the nation from bondage and from difficulties they faced on their journey to Canaan. He frees us that He might be our Master and care for us forever. When He crowns us, He transforms slaves into kings (Rom. 5:17).

Man is frail and temporary, but believers enjoy “eternal youth” and spiritual renewal. David compares it to the eagle that looks old but still soars upward with new strength.

We belong to the King who rules over everything. The angels praise Him!

 

Psalm 104 – God’s Creation

 

How easy it is to take for granted the world that God created! We see the blemishes but not the blessings, and we forget what kind of world God gave us.

It is a place of greatness, not the greatness of man, but the greatness of God. Only a great and wise God could make this kind of world.

It is a place of goodness. He provides life, water; food and homes for man and beast and also the birds, and He sees to it that they are cared for. Everything in creation is God’s gift to us to enjoy ( I Tim 6:17).

It is a place of gladness. God rejoices over creation, and we should be “glad in the Lord”. Creation is a window through which we see God, not a mirror in which we see ourselves; and the more we see Him, the happier we should be. Only this will make us good stewards of God’s creation.

Psalm 101 - Our Influence, Psalm 102 Look by Faith to the Lord.

 

Psalm 101 – Our Influence

 

“I will” nine times and “shall” six times. David wanted a perfect (blameless) heart, not a perverse (twisted) heart or a proud heart. To be “perfect” before the Lord does not mean to be sinless, it means to be sincere and without pretense. John called it “walking in the light” (I John 1:5-10).

David wanted justice in the land and the city, just as we do today. But civic righteousness must begin in the heart and in the home. We need honest people enforcing just laws, but we also need godly people living holy lives, starting at home.

We must be careful what we look at and listen to and with whom we fellowship. In a world full of illusion, we must avoid lies and must walk in God’s wisdom. Unlike David, we do not have authority to execute judgment on the wicked. But if our hearts and homes are what God wants them to be, our influence will be felt in the city and the nation.

 

Psalm 102 – Look By Faith to the Lord

 

God enjoys endless years, but we endure shortened days, troubled days, days that disappear like smoke, grass, and a shadow. We sit alone like birds in a desert and dying patients in a hospital.

Looking to yourself and your feelings will only make things worse. Look by faith to the Lord. Things will be different when you look from yourself to God.

If you know Jesus Christ by faith, you possess eternal life (I John 5:11-13). So, living in a world of death and decay need not be a threat to you because you will live forever with the Lord. (I Thess. 4:13-18).

As you grow older, you may find yourself resisting change. Loved ones move away to die, your body weakens, the world changes, and it is easy to become bitter and afraid. But God does not change. (Heb 13:508), and He is your guide and Friend to the very end.

The temporary things will change, but the things eternal will last (2 Cor. 4:11-18).

Psalm 99 – Give God the Honor due Him

 

“He is holy”, and He is high, therefore, give God the honor due Him.

The greatness of God makes the earth shake, and it should make the people tremble. Even the demons tremble when they think of God (James 2:19). It is scary to hear how carelessly many people speak about God or to God. It is even more frightening to see how carelessly people live, as though God will never require an accounting from them.

The Lord is exalted in strength, righteousness, and holiness. One way to exalt Him is by your worship, but you must back that up by a consistent walk. Christ should be magnified in your body so that the lost around you may realize how great He is.

Three great men of prayer are mentioned to encourage you in your praying. They were not perfect, but they heard God’s word, obeyed it, and God answered when they called. The Word of God and prayer must always go together (John 15:7), and so must prayer and obedience (Psalm 66:18).

 

Psalm 100 – Submit to God

 

Thanking the Lord is something we must do with our lives as well as with our lips.

“Enter to worship – depart to serve” should be written clearly above the door to the sanctuary, Too many people serve themselves and not the Lord, and too often we do not serve the Lord with “gladness”. The Lord loves a cheerful servant.

As creatures, we submit to the Creator who made us. As sheep, we submit to the Shepherd who died for us and now leads us in His paths. He not only made us, but He is making us as we yield to Him. (Eph. 2:10). Submission means fulfillment.

As priests, we are privileged to offer spiritual sacrifices to the Lord (I Peter 2:5). They include our songs of praise, good works, and material gifts. Because of whom He is and what He does for us, He is certainly worthy of our joyful thanks.

Psalm 97 – The Lord Reigns!

 

You may not see much righteousness and justice in the world today, but that does not mean God has been dethroned. For reasons we do not fully understand, God permits evil men to exploit the earth and its people, but one day He will come in power and glory and set things right.

Israel has played the key part in God’s gracious plan of salvation, witnessing the true God, passing the Bible on to us, and giving us the Savior. The nation has suffered much, but one day her Messiah will come in glory and fulfill the promises made to the patriarchs.

This group includes all of God’s people, sinners declared righteous through faith in Jesus Christ (Rom, 3L21-4:8). They love the Lord and rejoice in the Lord. If you are yielded to the King, you have good reason to be glad, so joyfully tell the world. The Lord reigns!

 

Psalm 98 – Praise the Lord!

 

We should praise the Lord because of His redemption, the revelation of His righteousness, and the remembrance of His mercy. That should keep you busy singing His praises for a long time!

We should praise the Lord with a joyful shout and song. Let voices join in praising the Lord. Not religious entertainment but the joyful expression of praise to God.

Everybody in the world and all the work of nature should praise the Lord. The anticipation of His coming excites creation, and you should be a part of their excitement. Joy to the World, the Lord has come!

Psalm 95 - God is Great! Psalm 96 - Sing, Give and Look to the Lord.

 

Psalm 95 – God is Great

 

God invites us to “shout joyfully” and to “kneel before the Lord”. God is great! He is a great Creator and a great King, and we are privileged to be His people.

God is grieved when the opposite of a worshiping heart that pleases the Lord is a hard heart that grieves the Lord. Imagine seeing God’s wonders and not submitting gladly to Him! The unbelieving Jews paid a high price for their sin. They died in the wilderness and never entered the Promised Land.  (Heb 3-4).

Take time to see the greatness of God and to praise Him. Give yourself to worship and praise and you will inherit all that God has planned for you in this life. A hard heart leads to a hard life, so keep your heart tender before God.

 

Psalm 96 – Sing, Give and Look to the Lord.

 

Sing a new song when you have a new experience with Him. Sing a worship song because God is glorious and great. Sing a gospel song because the nations need to hear the good news of salvation. Sing a song of victory and reveal the strength of the Lord. Sing a song of devotion and reveal the beauty of the Lord.

 

Give Him glory with your lips and heart, and give Him offerings with your hands. God does not need your gifts (Acts 17:24-25), but you need to bring your gifts to God. He deserves the best.

 

Look for the Lord. All nature is eagerly waiting for the Lord’s return, for then creation will be set free (Rom 8:18-25). The oppressed people will be vindicated, and sinners will be judged when Jesus Christ comes to reign, God’s people shall reign with Christ and then worship Him perfectly.

Psalm 93 - Three Anchors, Psalm 94 - God Will Teach You

 

 

Psalm 93 – Three Anchors

 

When the floods are rising, lay hold of three anchors that will steady you.

1.    God’s throne. No matter what may come to you today “the Lord reigns”. God is sovereign and everything is under control. His majestic throne is strong, established, and everlasting. His throne is above the floods, but He is with you in your trials and will see you through (Isa, 43:1-2).

2.    God’s testimonies. You can trust the Word of God because it never fails (Josh, 21:45, 23:14). Cling to His testimonies and withstand the floods by faith.

3.    God’s temple. God’s throne was the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies (Ps. 99:11), and there His glory rested. Satan himself cannot dethrone our Lord, and the men who attempt it are attempting vanity. When the storms come and the floods rise, you can experience peace, for “the Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before Him.” (Heb. 2:20).

 

 

Psalm 94 – God Will Teach You

 

God alone can judge and punish the wicked, but God’s people must stand up and be counted in the battle for truth. It is easier to be a spectator or an advisor than to be a soldier. When you enter the battle against evil, rely on God.

 

God knows all about the enemy. He hears their insolent speech. He sees their wicked deeds, and He will eventually bring them to judgment. The Captain of your salvation will not be caught off guard.

God will teach you what to do. The basic handbook for battle is the Word of God, an God will teach you what you need to know. Gideon was an ordinary farmer when God called him, and yet he became a mighty warrior because he let God teach him. (Judges 6-7). Even though he was hiding from the enemy, God called him a “mighty man of valor.”

God will help you fight. God is for you if you are against what He is against. When you fight, He will help you. If you slip, He will hold you. If you worry, He will comfort you, and if you are attacked, He will defend you.
