Deuteronomy
7 – Pray For Israel
Here
God is going to cast out many nations in order for Israel to inhabit the
promised land. The people in the land were so polluted and corrupt that God put
them out of the land. These people were idolatrous, and they would have led
Israel into idolatry. God tells the
Israelites that they are to utterly destroy their altars and break down their
images. All this polluting influence is
to be completely destroyed. He gives these commands because He loves the
Israelites. Man’s answer to God’s Love is obedience. God will bless any person
who respond to His love by obedience. The faithfulness of God in their past and
in our past should be an encouragement in the future. God gave the Hittites,
the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites,
and the Jebusites 430 years to see whether they would turn to God and turn from
their sins. God is a God of mercy. The cup of their iniquities was full, and
the judgment of God fell upon them.
God
is a God of mercy and of love in the Old Testament as well as He is in the New
Testament.
