Deuteronomy
16 Three Feasts
The
feast of Passover was instituted as a Memorial to Israel’s deliverance
from Egypt and their adoption as Jehovah’s nation. It was Israel’s birth into a
new relationship with God. It was to be served in one place, which was in
Jerusalem. All the males of Israel were to go to Jerusalem at that time. It was a reminder that we have been redeemed by
the blood of the Lamb of God. They were to number seven weeks after the
Passover, which would be forty-nine; then the next day would be the Sabbath,
the fiftieth day. This was known as the Pentecost. It celebrated the
first or earliest fruits of the harvest. It lasted seven days and it, too, was
to be kept in the place which the Lord should choose, which was Jerusalem. All
males were required to attend. Three times a year they were to travel to
Jerusalem to keep these feasts. It was to be a time of rejoicing. The Pentecost
speaks of renewal and the coming of the Spirit of God to His people
The
courthouse in that day was not a building. Instead of being in the center of
town, it was at the edge of town, at the gate in the wall around the city. The
reason for that was that it was the place where all the citizens entered or
left the city. The Feast of Tabernacles looks to the future kingdom that
God has promised His people when their pilgrim journey is ended.
