Samuel 16 – The Liar, Accuser, Avenger, Traitor
In
times of crisis, people respond in different ways:
First,
there was the liar. Ziba was an opportunist who took advantage of both David
and Mephibosheth. He thought he could get something out of the estate of
Mephibosheth and in his scheming can regain the throne for the house of Saul.
Proverbs 18:13 “He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and
shame to him.” David fell for Ziba’s scheme and put Mephibosheth’s estate into
Ziba’s hands.
The
accuser was Shimei. He was related to Saul and blamed David for the destruction
of Saul’s family and kingdom. David patiently “took it” and left it in God’s
hands.
The
Avenger was Abishai. He was usually quick to declare war, but David had a
better approach.
The
traitor was Ahithophel who was David’s esteemed counselor. He sided with
David’s son Absalom. David prayed “Just as long as I know that things are right
with God, I will bear these burdens that come upon me.” In Psalm 55:12-15 David
wrote, “For it is not an enemy who reproaches me; Then I could bear it. Nor is
it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me; then I could hide from
him. But it was you, a man my equal, My companion and my acquaintance. We took
sweet counsel together and walked to the house of God in the throng.
