Numbers
26 The Second Census
The
taking of the second census was a sign that the nation’s wanderings were soon
to end. Note the people mentioned who
were given special attention: Dathan and
Abiram, who rebelled against the Lord; Nadab and Abihu, who defied the Lord;
and Joshua and Caleb, who believed the Lord.
The
difference between the head count in the first census of the Israelites to the
second census was a decrease of $1,820 people. The old generation died in the
wilderness, just as God had told them.
This is now the new generation.
All the old, except Joshua and Caleb had died. God did not hold those who were under twenty
responsible for the failure and rebellion at Kadesh. This may give us some indication as to the
age of accountability. Not to say it is, but it may be older than many of us
suspect.
Here
is a chart of the census prepared by Keil and Delitzch.
