Drunkenness

Drunkenness

Ephesians 5:18

According to the Webster dictionary drunkenness means: Saturated with liquid, given to habitual excessive use of alcohol, unsteady or lurching as if from alcoholic intoxication.

In the Bible, drunkenness refers to the state of being intoxicated by alcohol, leading to impaired judgement and behavior. It is often portrayed as a vice that results in moral and spiritual decay (Galatians 5:19-21) and is linked to other sinful behaviors such as debauchery and idolatry. Additionally, drunkenness serves as a metaphor for spiritual confusion and helplessness in times of calamity (Job 12:25: Isaiah 19:14. The Bible condemns drunkenness, urging believers to remain sober-minded and vigilant (I Peter 5:8).

“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:18

Doubt

Doubt

Matthew 14:28-31, Matthew 8:26, Hebrews 11

Peter was walking on the water to Jesus until he got distracted. He took his eyes off Jesus and began to sink. Jesus said, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”  Matthew 14:31

Jesus’ disciples were fearful in a storm and were amazed that Jesus could calm the seas. Matthew 8:26

Do we not know Jesus well enough to know that He can do anything? Why do we doubt?

“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1.

The chapter of Hebrews 11 shows us examples of the men of the Bible who had faith.

Peter lost what faith he had at the time, because he took his focus off Jesus. Had he believed that Jesus was stronger than the wind he would have walked all the way to Jesus.

If we get to know Jesus by studying His word, then we would have the faith of those in Hebrews 11 and will believe that Jesus can do anything.

Divorce

Divorce

Mark 10:2-12

Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her.”

Because of the hardness of man’s heart Moses allowed this, but Jesus said that from the beginning of the creation, God had made man and woman to leave their parents and be joined together and become one. Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate.

Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery. Same goes for the wife, if she divorces her husband and marries another commits adultery.

If the spouse dies, the surviving spouse is free to remarry.

Throughout the ages this scripture has been steadily ignored. We are a self-centered people, seeking happiness and not putting God first and obeying His laws. That being said, God is a forgiving God and His judgment alone stands. He can use us in any capacity of our lives. Let us go forward and seek to do what is right in God’s eyes and glorify Him in all that we do.

Discouraged

“Yea though I walk through the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4.

“The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime and in the night His song shall be with me – A prayer to the God of my life.” Psalm 42:8

“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him. The help of my countenance and my God.” Psalm 42:11

“Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:11,12

“Even though our outward man is perishing, the inward man is being renewed day-by-day.” “For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Cor. 4:16,18

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6

Disaster Threatens

Psalm 91, Psalm 118:5-6, Luke 8:22-25

“Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” Psalm 1:3-4

“Because you have made the Lord who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling, no evil shall befall you.” Psalm 91:9-10

“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:11

“The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.” Psalm 118:6

Depressed

                                                     Depressed

Psalm 34

“The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him and delivers them.

There is no want for those who fear Him.

Those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.

Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.

The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart and saves such as have a contrite spirit.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.

The Lord redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned.”

Depression brings negative thinking. Always look on the bright side and trust in the Lord that He knows what is best for you and is always with you in all your situations.

Depravity

                                                         Depravity

John 3:19-21

The word depravity means moral corruption or wickedness.

"Condemnation is because men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest their deeds be exposed."

If we walk in the truth, we walk in the light and our deeds are clearly seen, not only by others, but especially by God.

There is no depravity or condemnation in serving God.

Defeated

Defeated

Romans 8:31-39

“If God is for us, who can be against us? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril or sword? Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us?”

Nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

No matter how others treat us or talk about us behind our back, if we are God’s child, He will protect us and stand up for us.

He will never leave us, nor will we have to fight our battles alone. Our God fights our battles for us. Sometimes, we must be still and know that God is working on our behalf.

We are not defeated when we trust and believe in Jesus Christ.

Death

Death

John 11:25,26

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes I me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.”

Jesus died on the cross so that we might live. He craves a relationship with us and if we have that relationship, even though our bodies will return to dust, our souls will go on and live with Jesus Christ in heaven.

Without a relationship with Jesus both our body and soul will die, and we will not have a home in heaven but an eternity in hell.

“No man comes to the Father, except through His Son Jesus Christ.” John 14:6. He is the way, the truth and life.

Crime

Crime

Matthew 15:17-20

“Those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adultery, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man.”

Have you ever been told to “watch your tongue” or “think before you speak.”

Oftentimes when we speak we tell on ourselves. Of what our character is. Our negative words speak of a complainer or a depressed person. Our cussing speaks of a person who doesn’t think before he/she speaks. Some might consider that person an illiterate individual. Talking bad of others is considered a gossiper.

According to the scripture above, our words come from the heart and defile a man.

We need to guard or heart with thoughts that are “true, just, pure, lovely, of good report, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8. From this comes goodness and no crime will come from it.

Covetousness

Covetousness

Mak 7:21-23

“Covetousness comes from within and defiles a man.”

Covetousness means a strong desire for worldly possessions, wealth or gain.

It is the desire for what someone else has to the point of doing anything to get it. A biblical example would be David and Bathsheba, Cain and Abel. Achan coveted a robe, silver and gold and stole them which led to the death of many of his relatives.

The sin of covetousness can lead to other sins such as theft, murder and adultery.

Exodus 20:17, the tenth commandment forbids coveting anything that belongs to a neighbor.

The rule of thumb that our parents taught us or should have taught us is not to touch anything that does not belong to you. What isn’t yours, you pay for or ask for. Never take it assuming the other person won’t care. Or that you will get away with it. God is watching always.

Conscious of sin

Conscious of Sin

Proverbs 28:13

“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.”

Galatians 5:19 gives us the works of the flesh (the sins we are to avoid): Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries... of those who practice such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God.”

Who amongst us has not done at least one of these sins? The fact is, that we are all sinners and will never be perfect, but our goal is to be as Christ-like as possible. To do that we must confess our sins and repent (change our ways) so that we will not do them anymore.

If we practice the fruits of the Spirit, it will be so much easier to strive toward the goal of Christlikeness.

The Fruits of the spirit are Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Let us put away our sins and follow Jesus.

Conceit

Conceit

Luke 18:9-14

The Pharisee exalted himself and bragged about all that he had done and praised himself for not being like the tax collector.

The tax collector humbled himself and asked God for mercy. He professed to be a sinner.

“We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23.

There is nothing we do that God does not equip us to do. Everything we do should be done in a manner pleasing to God and to be done to glorify God. We should not boast that everything we do is done by our own power.

Our reward for all that we do is not so great a reward on earth as it will be in heaven.

Let us humble ourselves in our service to Him and to others In that we can’t do anything without God.  All glory goes to God. Honor him, praise Him and live for Him in all that we do.

Bitter-Critical

Bitter- Critical

I Corinthians 1

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort which we ourselves are comforted by God.” I Cor. 1:1-4

There was a time Paul was so burdened that he lost his strength and despaired of his life. I Cor. 1:8. He put his trust in God to be delivered by God.

Without God, we can become so bitter or critical of our circumstances that we can become depressed. God is always present in our life. We need to lay down our bitterness at Jesus’ feet and allow Him to turn our circumstance around. Focus on God, not on self or the circumstance.

Bereaved

Bereaved

Matthew 5:4, 2 Corinthians 1:3,4

“Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” 2 Corinthians 1:3,4

Jesus reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 4:13 that we do not have to sorrow as those who do not hope. We as believers have the ultimate assurance that Jesus died and rose again, ascended and is coming again. We also believe that He will bring with Him those that have died. One day, all believers will be reunited in the grandest reunion ever seen!

God is there and we can always hold onto Him for courage and strength.

Ultimately when someone dies, it is not entirely about them but about those who are left behind to mourn the loss of a loved one. Will it draw us closer to God or will we move further away from God? If we want to reunite with those who have gone to heaven, we must draw closer to God.

Backsliding

Backsliding

“If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:6-9

There may come a time in our life where we decide to do things our way. We think we can do it alone and will come out alright. We may think that being a Christian is too hard and has become a struggle to do things God’s way. This may go on for years and things may go smoothly for a while. Then one day, when things start falling apart, we may look back and realize we had been spinning our wheels and had not grown one bit in our spiritual walk with God. There is a reason God tells us to fellowship with one another. We need each other to grow and encourage each other. We had back slidden and then we realize that it is easier to be in God’s light than to live on our own in the darkness of the world by our own efforts. Then we turn to Psalm 51 and pray this prayer to God. It is a prayer of repentance. God bless all those who have returned to the fold and once again fellowship with God and one another.

Anxious

Anxious

Psalm 46, Matthew 6:19-34, Philippians 4:6, I Peter 5:6,7

“God is a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

Being anxious is a waste of time. “Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?” Matthew 6:27

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ.” Philippians 4:6

“Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.” I Peter 5:6,7

“The Lord shall fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” How many times have we prayed to God to fix a problem for us, just to take it back and try to solve the problem ourselves? I for one am good at that, especially when it comes to my children. I have found that taking matters into my own hands messes things up more than before. God promises to fight our fight for us. He in return expects us to be quiet and let Him handle it the way He sees fit. I am extremely glad that God always has my best interest at heart and especially those of my loved ones. God is all-knowing. He sees how the problem started, why it happened and already knows the ending. We needn’t worry about how things are going to turn out when we hand our problems over to God. He promises that “all things turn out to the good for those who love the Lord.” Romans 8:28. I trust God to guide all my children to truth and understanding and in the end to everlasting life.

Afraid

Afraid

Psalm 34:4, Matthew 10:28, 2 Timothy 1:7, Hebrews 13:5,6

“The Lord will deliver you from all your fears.” Psalm 3:4.

“God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

“The Lord is my helper, I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Hebrews 13:5,6.

“Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both body and soul in hell.” Matthew 10:28

Being afraid can cause a fight or flight reaction. Take thought to take a deep breath and slow down your adrenalin. Ask yourself where the fear is coming from. We know it is not from God; therefore, it must be coming from our own thought process. A person can talk their self into a panic attack. That is by what-iffing.  What if I get sick? What if I embarrass myself or if I embarrass those around me. We must turn that negative thinking into: What if I go and have a great time? What if I am strong and keep my focus on what is around me and not on myself? Our thoughts can either make us or break us, that is why God tells us to take every thought captive. 2 Corinthians 10:5. Most anticipatory anxiety turns out to be nothing at all, not what we expected. Now if there is a bull charging you, then panic, that is the time to RUN!

Adversity

Adversity

Matthew 10:16-39

There will be times of adversity. Times when people will curse you, abuse you, or speak unkind words to and about you. Do not retaliate but pray to God and ask Him to fight this battle for you.

Ask Him to give you the right words to speak and discernment to know when to speak and when to be silent. Some things we just need to walk away from. Other times we need to stand strong and hold on to God’s words. Don’t be fearful of people, whether they will hurt you or not. Put on the armor of God and He will shield you. If they kill your body, your soul is safe in God’s hands.

If you stand strong in God’s promises, your soul will be saved. If you do not stand strong in God, then fear Him, for He can kill not only the body, but your soul tool.

God tells us that we will have troubles, but we are not to be afraid because He promises that He will never leave us or forsake us. Hebrews 13:5. Let us not lean upon ourselves but lean on God and allow Him to fight our battles for us. His ways are always the better ways.

Just as He told the Israelites to be still and know that He is God, He tells us the same. Psalm 46:10.

We live in troubled times, but God is all powerful and He protects His own. He is stronger than the winds or any storm that comes our way. Trust Him and He will take care of us.

Adultery

Adultery

Matthew 6:19-34

“Seek first the Kingdom of God.” There is no other place or person that will meet your needs than our Father in Heaven. There is no need to look elsewhere when we seek God first.

God knows what you need before you ask. He knows your heart, whether it is filled with light or darkness. Fill it with the light of God and all your needs will be met. God knows what is best for you. It may not look the same as we see it, but it is always much better than we see it. You cannot live in the light and the darkness at the same time. It does not co-exist.

You cannot serve two masters, both man and God without hating one or the other. You must choose this day for which you will serve. If you serve God, there is no need to look elsewhere.

God provides our clothes, our food just as He provides for the birds of the air. Have faith and trust in God, whether it be about our food, what we wear, our problems in our marriage, our problems in life in general.

Today is sufficient for itself so it is important that we live for today, not in the past or the future but minute by minute, day-by-day. Start with this day, accept God and live for Him and He will take care of you.
