Alas!
And Did My Savior Bleed?
When we think about our life, all that we did in the
past, what we are doing now, and whether we are worthy to have someone suffer
and die for us, we should be humbled. We should get down on our knees and thank
Jesus for thinking us worthy of His sacrifice. Christ didn’t only bear our sins
upon the cross, but the sins of the whole world. What a burden to carry on one’s
shoulders. He bled for us because He Loves us. He died for us so that we can be
rid of our sins. All that He did for us we can never repay. We can only give ourselves
to Him and put all our faith and trust in Him.
Lyrics by Isaac Watts, arranged by Ralph E. Hudson
“Alas! And did my Savior bleed? And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head for such a worm as I?
Was it for crimes that I have done He groaned upon the
tree? Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree!
Well might the sun in darkness hide, and shut His glories
in, when Christ, the mighty Maker died for man the creature’s sin.
But drops of grief can never repay the debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself to Thee, - ‘Tis all that I can do.
At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
and the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my
sight, and now I am happy all the day!
