Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
This time of year, we get to enjoy Christmas carolers and
most of the songs they sing are about peace on earth, good will toward men. We
live in a chaotic world and sometimes find it hard to find peace, much less
good will toward men. One thing we can hang on to is the fact that this world
is not our home, we are just passing through. There will come a time when all
the songs and all our hopes of peace and good will, will come true. Let us
focus on the Promises of God and continue to sing about peace and good will
toward mankind.
Lyrics by Henry W. Longfellow, arranged by J. Baptiste
Calkin
“I heard the bells on Christmas Day their old familiar
carols play, and wild and sweet the words repeat of peace on earth, good will
to men.
I thought how, as the day had come, the belfries of all
Christendom had rolled along the unbroken song of peace on earth, good will to
men.
And in despair I bowed my head; “There is no peace on
earth,” I said, “For hate is strong, and mocks the song of peace on earth, good
will to men.”
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep; “God is not
dead, nor doth He sleep, The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, with peace on
earth, good will to men.”
Till, ringing, singing on its way, the world revolved
from night to day, A voice, a chime, a chant sub-lime, of peace on earth, good
will to men!”
