Dear
Lord and Father of Mankind
This prayer puts a song into our heart. It reminds us
that we are all sinners and need forgiveness. Our thoughts are not God’s
thoughts so, He tells us to not lean upon our own understanding. Therefore, we
pray for wisdom and understanding so that God can adjust our thinking and put
us in a rightful mind. All that we do, we should do to serve God and praise Him
for the skills He gives us. In turn, God gives us peace even during times of
stress and tribulations. It’s called “the peace that passes understanding.” If
you haven’t experienced that, then put your trust in Him and He will supply all
your needs.
Lyrics by John G. Whittier, arranged by Frederick C.
Maker
“Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish
ways! Reclothe us in our rightful mind; In purer lives Thy service finds, in
deeper reverence praise.
In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian
sea the gracious calling of the Lord, let us like them, without a word, rise up
and follow Thee.
Drop Thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings
cease; take from our souls the strain and stress and let our ordered lives
confess the beauty of Thy peace.
Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and
Thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake,
wind, and fire, o still small voice of calm!
Amen.
