Selflessness
The quality of caring more about what other people need
and want than about you yourself need and want.
There once was a lady named Helen Finney who made over
100 mittens each year to see that everyone had warm hands for Christmas. They
called her the ‘mitten lady” because she did this anonymously until just before
her death.
Another lady crocheted quilts and handed them out at the
local nursing home. Still another made quilts to hand out as birthday gifts to
residents of a local low-income housing.
There are so many ways to be selfless. The need is
unending. I have found that the best way to help yourself is to put yourself
out for others. The rewards are unending.
Think of Jesus’ selflessness. He went all the way to the
cross for us. His reward is in His followers who needed Him so much, and in
return, they became selfless in helping others. The saints in heaven rejoice every
time someone turns to God and begins to bring others to Him.
If you are feeling down on yourself, then reach out and
help someone else. Volunteer in a soup kitchen, nursing home. Become a driver for
those without a car. Reach out to a homeless person with food or blankets.
There are so many opportunities for us, that we only need to look past
ourselves and reach out to someone else.
Jesus said, “I have glorified thee on earth; I have
finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” John 17:4
