Submission

Submission

1 Peter 2:13-17

“Therefore, submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the King as the supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men- not as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the King.” I Peter 2:13-17

These verses are so appropriate for what is happening in our world today. They clearly state what God’s will is in honoring the leadership of our nation.

We are to submit to our leaders of our nation. We are to pray for them. It wasn’t so much the people’s vote that placed our president in office and other leaders in place, but God Himself who makes the final decision. He always gives us either what we want or what we need or what we deserve.

God is in control and sometimes things get worse before they get better to help us build our character and to draw us closer to Him. Even at the worse scenario God is always present and will provide for His children and protect them. No amount of griping or grumbling will make a difference in what is happening today. What will make a difference is our love and encouragement for each other and our prayers over our nation and leaders. God will guide, guard and direct them as He does us individually. Let us honor those that God has anointed to rule over us while here on earth.

Sin

Sin

John 8:34-36

“Jesus answered them, most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits a sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” John 8:34-36

A sin is an infraction against God’s Word. It could be a sin of lying, stealing, gossiping, murder, adultery, idolatry or anything that is not pleasing to God.

Whatever the sin is, it becomes our master, making us a slave to sin. The slave of sin may not enter the kingdom of heaven unless one repents and sins no more. The child of God, however, will live in God’s house for eternity.

“For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God, being justified by His grace through that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” Romans 3:2-26.

We are all God’s creation, but we are not all God’s children. If you have not committed yourself to God and believe in His Son Jesus Christ, He offers his arms for you to repent of your sins and enter his kingdom.

Sorrowful

Sorrowful

Psalm 51, Matthew 5:4, John 14, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, I Thessalonians 4:13-18

Everyone has regrets in their life. David’s regrets were shared with us in Psalm 51. He had taken another man’s wife and had her husband killed to make her his own. With a deep-seated heart of remorse, he repented and ask God to “create in him a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within him.” He asked for forgiveness and in God’s infinite mercy God forgave him.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

“Jesus is the Way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus Christ.” John 14:6. God hears our prayers, He answers prayers, He sends us the Holy spirit to help us and live within us. He gives us peace. John 14.

I Thessalonians 4:13-18 reminds us that we don’t have to sorrow over the loved ones that have gone before us because when Jesus comes to get us, He will raise up the dead first, then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so, we shall always be with the Lord.

Strive not to sorrow over past mistakes or those loved ones we miss. Give it to God and wait on Jesus to come and get us to take us home with Him.

“He who waits on the Lord shall soar like wings of an eagle.” Isaiah 40:31.

Sick-in-Pain

Sick-in-Pain

Psalm 38, Matthew 26:39; Romans 5:3-5, 2 Corinthians 12:9,10, I Peter4:12,13,19

“I am troubled, I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all day long. For my loins are full of inflammation and there is no soundness in my flesh. I am feeble and severely broke; I groan because of the turmoil of my heart.” Psalm 8:6-8

“Do not forsake me, O Lord; O my God, be not far from me! Make haste, O Lord, my salvation!” Psalm 38:21,22

“We also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance, and perseverance, character, and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our heats by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:3-5

Paul stated in 2 Corinthians 12:9,10, “And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness… For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

“Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial, which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.” 2 Peter 4:12,13

“Therefore, let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.” 2 Peter 4:19

Take heart, those who are sick and in pain. God is our Great Physician! Seek Him out and pray to Him, have others pray for you. God is a God of miracles, and He doesn’t want anyone to suffer.

Self-Righteousness

Self-Righteousness

Luke 18:11-12

A self-righteous person is a narrow-minded or moralistic person. It is having an attitude and belief of moral superiority thinking they are more virtuous than others. They have an outward focus on the behavior of others, and an arrogance stemming from a moral high ground.

When someone constantly tries to make themselves look better by putting others down. They become this way when they lack understanding about a specific topic.

Everyone has a story, and no one knows another’s’ story unless they have lived in their shoes. To live a self-righteous life means they are not accepting others for who they are and do not understand where the behavior of others comes from.

If this definition defines you, then try focusing on humility, recognizing your own need for God’s grace and forgiveness and strive to emulate Jesus’ humility and love for others.

When we are confident in our own worthiness, there’s no reason to try to prove it to ourselves or convince others of it.

Self-Exaltation

Self-Exaltation

Luke 14:11

“For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

The most used words in the vocabulary are the words “me” and “I”. An example of someone exalting himself and being humbled by God is found in Daniel 4.

Nebuchadnezzar “at the end of twelve months he was walking around the royal palace of Babylon. The king spoke, saying, “is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?” while the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice fell from heaven. “King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken; the kingdom has departed from you!”

God had taken Nebuchadnezzar and made him as one of the animals. I encourage you to read the whole chapter to get the whole story.  Nebuchadnezzar exalted himself instead of giving God the credit for making the kingdom as it was. The King could not have done any of it without God.

We are who God created us to be. Granted we have choices that we make outside of God’s will, but He still uses us, even as we do. We cannot do anything great on our own. God gives us the skills and the mindset to do our best at whatever we do. The credit does not go to us, it is all from God. It is better to humble ourselves than to be humbled by God. Whatever God gives us, He can also take away. Next time we start to say “I” or “me” we should pause to think that I cannot do anything without God.

Protected

Protected

Psalm 18:1-3, Psalm 34:7

“I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so, shall I be saved from my enemies.” Psalm 18:1-3

“The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him and delivers them.” Psalm 34:7

This is a scary world we live in; bad news lurks around every corner but there is no need to be afraid knowing that God is in control and protects His children. God is in all situations. He is in our government, our relationships, our health matters, our storms and in all our trials and tribulations.

He says, “Lo, I am with you always.” Matthew 28:20. His protection is there. Lean into Him. He not only protects but He provides.

Prayerful

Prayerful

Psalm 4, Psalm 42, Luke 11:1-13, John 17, I John 5:14,15

“Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me of my distress; Have mercy on me and hear my prayer.” Psalm 4:1

“But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself him who is godly. The Lord will hear when I call to Him.” Psalm 4:3

“The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me – a prayer to the God of my life.” Psalm 42:8

Luke 11:24 is the Lord’s prayer. If you are having trouble finding the words to pray, this is the go-to prayer.

“So, I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you.” Luke 11:9

“I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom you have given Me, for they are Yours.” John 17:9

“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word that they may be as Me, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us.” John 17:20,21

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” I Joh 5:14

Jesus prays for us; we also must pray for one another.

Overcome

Overcome

Psalm 6, Romans 8:1-9, John 1:4-9

“Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are troubled. My soul is also troubled.” Psalm 6:2-3”

“I am weary with my groaning; All night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears; My eye wastes away because of my grief.” Psalm 6:6,7

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit, the things of the spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Romans 8:5,6

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:4-5

God sends His Holy Spirit to minister to us. In our time of grief, He comforts us. In our time of troubles, He gently reminds us that Jesus is the light and if we focus on that light He will lead us out of the darkness. We will find peace and comfort.

Needing Rules for Life

Needing Rules for Life

Romans 12

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2

“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.” Romans 12:9

“Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.” Romans 12:16

“If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” Romans 12:18

“Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21

Romans 12 is a good chapter to be read completely through not just the ones I typed here. Everyone needs rules to live by to have harmony in this world. The number one rule that God gives us is to love one another as He has loved us. Giving ourself over to God and letting Him have control over our life makes it easier to love each other and to be kind and to make good choices in our life. Let us choose to serve God and each other.

Needing Peace

Needing Peace

John 14:1-4, John 16:33, Romans 5:1-5, Philippians 4:6,7

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.  In My Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; That where I am, there you may be also. And where I go, you know, and the way, you know.” John 14:1-4

“These things I have spoken to you that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:3

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ.” Philippians 4:6,7

So many things in this world are troubling and it can be hard to find peace amidst it all. But when you believe in Jesus and know that He is in control over it all, then that peace that surpasses all understanding is more attainable. If you are a child of God, then you know how this story ends. Christ is the victor and this world that we live in is temporary. This is not our home; we are just passing through. May the God of peace rest upon your soul!

Needing Guidance

Needing Guidance

Psalm 32:8, Proverbs 3::5,6

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” Psalm 32:8

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5,6

Whatever decision or problem comes your way, the best practice that we can do is to go to God in prayer and ask for His guidance. He will guide us in our decisions, through our struggles, through our trials, and through our storms. His answer comes in various ways, so we must always stay in tuned for His guidance. He invites us to come to Him and seek Him out. He is never too busy or too far away to hear our prayers. Even when we don’t know how to pray His Holy Spirit will intercede for us. He sends His Holy Spirit to indwell in all His children and will guide us all the way to the pearly gates.

Let us focus on His plan by seeking His guidance and by taking the time to wait on His response.

“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” Psalm 91:1-12.

Lonely

Lonely

Psalm 23, Hebrews 13:5,6

“Yea, though I walk through the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me, your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

“For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5.

Loneliness feels like a cloud of sadness that envelopes you. It is depression. It is a disconnection, a gap between he connection one desires and the ones they have. It is a form of social pain. A need for intimacy.

One way to overcome loneliness is to seek out others who may need a helping hand. It is a great comfort to be needed and to be able to comfort someone else.

Volunteer work is a great way to show others that you care and are useful and can benefit many people.

Above all else, wherever you are mentally, physically, spiritually, remember God is always there by your side.

Lip Service

Lip Service

Matthew 7:21

“Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven.” Matthew 7:21

Lip service is expressing approval or support for something or someone without taking any significant action.

One might pledge their allegiance to God but if they do not obey His commandments and do the will of God, it is merely lip service.

It is one thing to say God is my Father but if we don’t pay our respects to God in prayer, worship and praise, then we are only going through the motions and not confirming our belief in God. Our words must be followed by our actions.

Leaving Home

Leaving Home

Psalm 121, Matthew 10:16-20

“The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.” Psalm 121:5-8

“Behold, I send you out as sheep amid wolves. Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” Matthew 10:16

Are you considering going out on your own? Maybe moving into your first home, going off to college, or just seeking a place of solitude? Whatever the case, just know that God is always with you, watching over you, protecting you and will help you on your journey. Stand strong and rely on God always.

Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy

Matthew 23:27,28

“Woe, to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” Matthew 23:27,28

A hypocrite is someone who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion but acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings.

A hypocrite is someone who pretends to have certain beliefs or qualities that they don’t have.

A hypocrite is someone who gathers gossip and reveals others’ secrets and finds pleasure in the consequences of their misdeeds.

We must always tell our truths and live by them so that others will see it as truth. Let us live as Christ would have us live.

Hatred/Enemies

Hatred/Enemies

Matthew 5:43-48

“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:44,45

There are people in our life that we may not like, and people who may not like us. Not everyone can be of the same mind and pleasing to each other.

When we look at the people we don’t like; try looking at them through God’s eyes. God loves that person as much as He loves us. God created that person and has placed them in our lives for a reason. Maybe it is to teach us patience, or maybe it is to make us look inward at our own selves. Either way God is telling us to love our enemies, do good to our enemies, and pray for them. We don’t have to like the things they do, but we do have to love them.

If God can love us with all our imperfections and sinful ways, who are we that we can’t love even our enemies.

Greed

Greed

Luke 12:15:31

“One’s life does not consist in the abundance of things he possesses. It is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.”

And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

Seek the Kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.”

We as humans always want more, more love, more happiness, more possessions, more money, more clothes, more food and so much more. What we don’t think about is the fact that we can’t take it with us when we die, and that God always provides all we need.

“Not that I speak in respect to want, for I have learned in whatever state I am, therewith to be content.” Philippians 4:11

Considering what Paul was saying, he had so many trials and tribulations that of all people who could have been depressed. He could have wanted so much more but he knew God had a plan for him and he was willing to go through all that he went through to be a true testimony for God. I encourage you to read through Philippians to know Paul’s history and all that he went through.

Friends Fail

Friends Fail

Psalm 41:9-13, Luke 17:3,4, Romans 12:14,17,19,21, 2nd. Timothy 4 :16-18

Throughout our lifetime we acquire friends. Some friends are merely acquaintances, others are the ones we trust and want to share everything with. Then there are friends who stick with us throughout the good and the bad times.

Some friends slowly fade out of our life, others leave us abruptly leaving us to wonder “Why”, “what happened?”

When we trust in God, we can truly say that God closes and opens doors. Things might not end the way we want or expect but God has it all under control. When He closes one door, we can be assured that there is always something better coming through the next door He opens.

“By this I know that You are well pleased with me, because my enemy does not triumph over me. As for me You uphold me in my integrity and set me before You forever. Psalm 41:11,12

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” Romans 12:14. “Have regard for good things in the sight of all men.” Romans 12:17

“Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21

“At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them. But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me.” 2 Timothy 4:16-17

The only friend we can truly rely on is our Lord Jesus Christ. He is and should be everything to us and will never leave us. To Him be glory forever and ever!

Flesh

Flesh

Romans 13:14

“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts.”

All the human appetites we experience to feel good, to get what we want, and to be treated well is not wrong to want any of those things, but those cravings become sin when we serve them above all others and are willing to harm others to gratify them.

When we clothe ourselves in Christ, it produces a new grace and power to abstain from indulging in evil desires.

Paul is urging those of us who are in Christ to change the way we live. We don’t belong in the darkness any longer. We must stand in the light. We must live as Jesus lives.

Fear

Fear

Luke 12:5

“But I will show you whom you should fear. Fear Him who after your body has been killed, has power to cast into hell, yes, I say to you, fear Him.”

Jesus said this to emphasize to His disciples the importance of prioritizing reverence for God over fear of persecution.

We must not be afraid to speak the truth publicly. It is our opportunity and responsibility to spread the word and bring others to Christ.

Our testimony could make a difference in another person’s life. Whether they accept or reject God’s word is up to them. We must always stand up for God’s truth, fearing not man but God who can destroy both body and soul.

When Faith Fails

When Faith Fails

Psalm 42:5, Hebrews 11

“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.” Psalm 42:5.

“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

How strong is your faith?

When things get tough, when you are feeling anxious, when you have fallen for temptation, when your world seems to be crashing in around you, what do you do? Do you reach out to God, or do you try to handle problems on your own? We tend to do that, don’t we? And when things don’t work out the way we hoped, we must ask ourselves, why wasn’t my faith strong enough to let God handle it? Doesn’t He have our best interest at heart and doesn’t He promise “that all things turn out for the good to those who Love God and are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28.

In Hebrews 11 it mentions that Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham and Sarah all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them.

Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses and many others all obtained good testimony through faith. God invites us to seek Him in both the good times and the bad times. Wouldn’t it be great to see in His Book of Life our name written of those who died in faith.

Extravagance

Extravagance

Matthew 7:1-5

How can a person judge another person when they haven’t judged themselves first?

Sometimes when we don’t like something in another person we carry the same trait but haven’t yet looked in the mirror to see it.

We should never criticize another person without first seeing if we do the same thing we are criticizing them for.

“Judge not, that you be not judged, for what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and what measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”

Matthew 7:1,2.

Excuses

Excuses

Luke 14:15-24

How would you feel if you had a party and everyone you invited had an excuse not to come?

What if it were Jesus inviting you into His home, His heart? What would be your excuse not to come? He invites you to follow Him.

Did you just get married, and your new bride is your priority? Do you have animals to tend to or new land to cultivate? These were the excuses of those invited to the master’s house for dinner in Luke 14:15-24.

Understandably the master got angry. Fortunately for those on the highways and byways, the food was not gone to waste.

Jesus has many followers, but He particularly wants you to follow Him. He wants you to come into His home, His heart.

Not going to a person’s dinner doesn’t sound like much but following Jesus, answering His invitation with a “yes” is the difference between life in heaven or eternity in hell.

What happens when you follow Jesus? First, following His words in the Bible gives one a sense of who He is and what He does. Following Him through prayer gives a feeling of building a relationship with Him. Following Him in worship and praise gives you a heart for God and the Holy Spirit. Following Him in baptism gives you a direct path to salvation.

What could be more important than following Jesus in all these ways straight to heaven.   What is your excuse?

Please read the scriptures listed, study them, apply them to your life and grow in the saving relationship with Jesus Christ our Savior.
